because customers opted for more modest motive power it did not always mean that they wanted their cars equipped like a Bul garian thrift store.' The latest Passat High- line models rectify that imbalance with a decent roster of standard kit for surprisingly modest prices. . Let us face it - as soon as we drop into a

car of the Passat’s ilk, the first thing we check for is the seating trim. If it is cloth trim, it smacks of Berlin taxi, but if it is leather then you have that authentic Cap tain of European Industry feel. The Highline does not disappoint in this respect, and with prices starting at £16,585 for the 2.0-litre petrol saloon, you will not need the amply padded salary of a Euro commissioner to get behind the wheel. Volkswagen claims the Highline offers a

hefty £1,780 of extras over and above the SE model on which it is loosely based, but refer to the price lists and you will discover that it only carries a £150 premium. This must surely make it one of the mostattractive value editions about.

These cars are designed to appeal more to

the private buyer and there is little doubt that the Passat Highline would make a very satisfying family saloon. Additional equip- ® ment also includes unique Michigan 15 in. ^ alloy wheels, rear parking sensors to ease you ^ into tight city bays, heated windscreen wash- er jets and heated front seats.

; This equipment is offered on top of the

standard complement of equipment already boasted by the Passat SE model. This includes anti-lock brakes, electronic stabili ty control, Climatronic air conditioning, a CD autochanger, twin front, side and curtain airbags and remote locking with immobiliser. It was not long ago that a big German saloon with this level of trim would command com fortably in excess of £35,000, but even the top-of-the-range Highline TDI130 turbo diesel estate with the optional automatic gearbox only just breaks the £20,000 barri er.

More typical prices across the saloon

range are £16,585 for the TDIlOO manual and £17,860 for the more powerful TDI130 manual. Should you want to specify this car with a five-speed Tiptronic gearbox instead, you will need £19,240. Shared with Audi, these two 1.9-litre power plants slot in just below the 150 b.h.p. V6 TDI engine that is intended for better-heeled Passat buyers. ^ Both are developments of existing units, the 100 b.h.p. engine replacing the old 90 b.h.p. unit and the PD 130 replacing the previous ^ 115 b.h.p. power plant. Although the power ^ increases may sound slight, the on-the-road improvements are surprisingly great, with ^ significant increases in torque and perform- ^ i ance on offer. This is particularly true of the A ; entry-level TDI PD 100 model.

Thanks to Pumpe-Duse technology, the , engineers have managed to achieve impres-

Perrys have a commitment to supply 50 307 Estates during 2005. So far, 30 have been provided and are now in serv ice. Ten more will arrive by the end of May and the remaining 10 will be supplied over the coming months. These Peugeot 307 Estates arc diesel-turbo models chosen for their economy and durability.

Protect's Service Director is David Scaife. Wlicn asked why he had ciiosen Peu geot for his companyis replacement fleet he replied: iWhen finding fleet vehi cles, I have to take into consideration the whole life cost of a vehicle, the cost of maintenance, reliability is obviously important and I must look at the residual value of tile vehicle for wlicn we have to replace it. The Peugeot 307 Estate suits all our requirements. Whatis more, the reports tiiat Iim hearing from Hie service team seem to indicate that we made the right decision. Tlic Pcugcots are performing well, just as we had expected. live nut had any complaints or anyone w ishing to return to the previous make and model h the reaction has been entirely positive.!

David Scaife of Prolec continues; iAs for Perrys Peugeot, tlie dealership has proved to be an excellent intermediary between our company and the manu facturer. License or remember that his car needs servicing. In Smallbone Cars, however, Tedd has found the answer to his problems.

Over the last year Tedd has bought a number of vehicles from this enterprising dealership including a top-of-the-range BMW 545, a MINI Cooper S, 3 Nissan Vanettes for his garden main tenance business and two other small cars for his children.

Apart from the quality of their cars and their comprehensive aftersales service, Tedd has been mightily impressed with Smallbone’s attention to detail. They remind him when the ser vices are due on all his vehicles, collecting and returning them- when serviced. They also take care of all the paper work for renewing the cars’ road tax and also liaise with his insurance broker to ensure that each vehicle is adequately covered. The dealership even handled the paper work witli the DVLA regard ing the cherished number plates that Tedd’s cars use.

This level of service and attention to detail has meant that Tedd no longer has to worry about such matters. Smallbone take care of everything for him regarding his cars, leaving Tedd free to concentrate on his busy life.
