IF you have young children, the best thing about a family day out is that you can make it last a whole month. So it was with our family outing to

■ '25™ ANNIVERSARY

Wh^CTer,’ " you want..r'

the little darlings with lurid tales of the excitement to come, but at the first hint of naughtiness remind them that it could all be snatched away unless things improve. Some might call this barefaced bribery. I prefer to call it the “Santa Principle” , for, as all parents know, Santa only brings pres ent to good boys and girls. By the week of the trip just the mere mention of the word “Camelot” could end my four-year-old’s tantrum in a trice. In the fortnight following the trip,

change tack slightly, adopting the line “well F this is how you’re going to behave there won’t be any more trips to Camelot!” Of course, all this relies on the day out

living up to your promises of non-stop fun and thrills - and Camelot certainly did. Despite unseasonably cold weather our

kids had a whale of a time, their adven tures told and retold in breathless gabble to a succession of dumbstruck grandpar ents, little pals and complete strangers! My pre-trip promises were based on lit

tle more than hope and secondhand sto ries, as I had never visited Camelot before and wondered F it would be “too old” for our youngsters, aged two and four. I need n’t have worried, as it achieves the impos sible by appealing to children of all ages, even the grown-up ones. There’s a clue in the name that the

theme for this particular theme park - just off the M6 at Charnock Richard - is King Arthur and the Knights of the Round

Table. It works well, with plenty of drag ons, wizards, knights in shining armour and distressed damsels giving the place a magical appearance to young eyes. The park is split into five main areas, with attractions to suit everyone, from gentle carousels to wild, white knuckle roller coaster rides. We found plenty of rides that our tod

dlers could go on with parents in tow, even a mini rollercoaster. Other favourites included spinning teacups, a ferns wheel, carousels and roundabouts and - a particu lar hit - a dragon ride. More fun was had in the indoor soft play area (a chance to warm up a bit!) and at Squire Bumpkin’s Farm, which offers close encounters with a variety of friendly farm animals. Purely in the interests of research, I

tried out some of those white knuckle rides, which only served to confirm my worst fears - I’m getting too old for all this. One in particular, Excalibur 2, delivered thrills and, thankfully, no spills as I was tipped and suspended completely upside down at least a thousand feet in the air... well it felt like a thousand feet at the time. “Never again” I vowed as I staggered away... then went back and did it all again! There is no shortage of entertainment

laid on too, from Merlin’s School of Wiz ardry to the realistic rough and tumble of regular jousting tournaments and sword fights in the knights’ arena and a fascinat ing falconry display. For more information and to check opening times, you can call Camelot’s 24-hour information line on 08702 204820 or log onto www.camelot- themepark.co.uk The Clitheroe Advertiser and Times is

giving three lucky readers the chance to \vin a family pass, worth £55, to enjoy a day out at Camelot. For you chance to win this fantastic prize, all you have to do is answer the question on the coupon.
