NEW ZEALAND is quite rightly proud of its sauvignon blanc. 'This grape variety is what put New Zealand firmly on the wine map back in 1985 with the classic Cloudy Bay. There are many new wineries since then and established in 1980 is the Stoneleigh winery in
■ Wairau Valley, Marlborough, heart of the sauvignon blanc country. The STONELEIGH SAUVI
GNON BLANC 2004 comes from a long dry season, coupled with the characteristic smooth pebbles that cover the vineyard. These play a key role in reflect ing the sunlight, speeding up the ripening process. The nose leaps out of the glass with hints of tropical fruits and cut grass, the wine is medium bodied with a mineral backdrop 'that reminds me of a Sancerre from ■ the Loire. Retailing at £6.99 this is available from Threshers and other good wine shops. To partner this I have select
ed what captures all that is good in New Zealand red wines at the moment. Pinot noir is being grown in increasing quan tities and is the backbone to the red wine industry on South Island.

MONTANA RESERVE
PINOT NOIR 2003 is fermented in oak barrels which adds a rich ness of flavour and complexitj to the wine. This is a deep coloured pinot displaying a har monious balance betweer extraction o f colour and th( tannic structure which ofter goes with this. ,On the nose this is slightlj
smoky with morello cherriei and dark autumnal fruits, the tanins are soft arid silky leading into a long finish. I have ofter said you have to pay £15 oi more for good pinot noir, bul this comes in at £9.99 and is available from Tesco, Threshers Oddbins and Majestic.

Pendle Leisure-Trust 'Focusing on Ability not Disability'
Pendle Leisure Trust lives up to the promise of inclusive fitness for everyone.
West Craven Sports Centre was selected as one of only 150 sites nationwide to secure funding to receive the IFI (Inclusive Fitness Initiative) seal of approval. 20% of the population are registered disabled and yet just 10% of these currently undertake any physical exercise. This is hardly surprising when you consider the additional barriers the disabled come up against.
As part of the Inclusive Fitness Initiative, considerable investment has gone in to removing some of these barriers with changes ranging from the inclusion of specialist equipment to lowering the reception desk, training of staff to colour contrasting of signage.
Steve Cunningham gave an inspiring welcome to all those who attended the launch at West Craven Sports Centre in Barholdswick earlier this month. Steve went blind at a young age, yet sport has been a key part of his life and focusing on his ability rather than disability, he has become a record-breaking sportsman.
Anne Meachem has taken up a new post working to encourage disabled individuals and groups to participate in. physical exercise to improve their health & wellbeing and will be ensiiring future developments at West Craven Sports Centre meet customer needs. She would be delighted to hear from you if you or someone you know would like to get involved with this fantastic initiative.
Simply call West Craven Sports Centre on 01282 666710.
Note: The IFI has been set up by the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) with a grant from the Sport England Lottery Fund. In the case of West Craven Sports Centre, funding has also been received courtesy of North West Development Agency through the West Craven Together Initiative.
