MARATHON trio Andrew Ronnan, Russell Keighley and Christine Mitchell have so far raised £5,000 for several wor thy causes by completing the 25th Flora London Marathon. Whalley resident and Ribble
Valley businessman Andrew (50) slipped on his running shoes and completed three marathons in five weeks. These included the Rome Marathon, where the father-of-three crossed the finishing line in four hours and 38 minutes. Earlier this month, he completed the Paris Marathon in four hours and 37 minutes and a week later tackled the London Marathon, finishing in four hours and 49 minutes. The long-distance runner is
no stranger to running big races and has competed in the Dublin, Berlin, Monaco, Stock holm, Venice, Athens, Amster dam and several London marathons. Andrew said it was very tir
ing, but the weather was nice and it was great fun. This is what he had to add: “You know when you’re tired when a camel overtakes you with a mile to go, “I knew I was tired when a

two-humped two-man camel overtook me with a mile to go, but I managed to beat a rhinoc eros and Little Britain’s Emily.” Andrew tackled the big races for a number of worthy causes.
These included the National Asthma Campaign, Cancer Research UK, Get Kids Going and locally he raised funds to resurface the road leading up to Whalley Bowling Green and the cricket pavilion. When completing the gru
elling 26-mi!e race, Andrew was accompanied by his friend, Russell Keighley, along with thousands of other entrants. Whalley resident Russell pounded the 26-mile circuit for the first time in memory of his friend, Ged Bunting, who died of cancer. The ex-Whalley Primary
School pupil ran to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and his finishing time was four
. hours and 22 minutes. Accompanying the tireless
duo was Clitheroe Royal Gram mar School sixth form PE teacher Christine Mitchell. Christine finished her first marathon in four hours and 30
• minutes and was running to boost funds for the NSPCC. But the trio’s fund-raising
doesn’t stop right there. A Rock ‘n’ Roll concert is being held at the end of May to raise funds to improve facilities at Whalley Cricket, Tennis and Bowling

‘Most remarkable experience’ in his life
SABDEN councillor Coun. Michael Field ing had his feet firmly on the ground when he raised more than £3,000 for Derian House Children’s Hospice and WaterAid. The 52-year-old, of Pendle Street, ran
the London Marathon, while his partner, Christine Wilson (49), tackled a sponsored swim at Clitheroe’s Ribblesdale Pool. The tireless fund-raisers chose to boost
funds for the two charities because they are the borough mayor Coun. Charles Wark- man’s favoured charities of the year. Coun. Fielding, who works at Ultra
frame, in Clitheroe, said he completed the 26-mile circuit in four hours and 30 minutes and described it as the most remarkable experience in his life. He commented: “It was absolutely fantastic and I loved it. The
crowds were brilliant and th’ e atmosphere
was electric. I didn’t need to stop once and I would definitely take part in it again.”
. Meanwhile, his partner, Christine, who works as a radiographer, at Burnley Gener al Hospital, swam 200 lengths in two hours and 37 minutes. Coun. Fielding added that he was con tinuing to collect the sponsor money.

He also spoke on the serious subject of the benefits the hospice can bring to those who are suffer ing and the dignified way in which hospices deal with all kinds of illnesses. Dr Sloan was thanked and presented with a gift on behalf of members by the lady captain, Mrs Jean Dearden, whose chosen charity for the year is the,Pendleside Hospice.
More than 80 members and guests,

Deaf Awareness Week
This years deaf awareness week is being held between May 2nd and 8th. The theme this year is to improve understanding of the different types of deafness by highlighting the many different methods of communication used.
Nearly 15% of the population have some degree of deafness. For every 10,000 people-
10 will be born profoundly deaf. They probably get little or no benefit from Hearing Aids and mainly use Sign Language to communicate.
20 will have become profoundly deaf. They may use Sign Language and probably also lipread.
too will be partially deaf. They may have difficulty following what is being said, even with hearing aids. Mostly they will lipread and some use sign language as well.
600 will be hard of hearing. They will be able to follow what is being said with a hearing aid and will be able use a telephone if it has an adjustable volume or has been designed to be used with a hearing aid. This year the sponsor of Deaf Awareness week is Geemarc communications Ltd, who
800 will be mildly hard of hearing. They may have difficulty following conversations particularly in large groups or in noisy situations. Some will wear hearing aids and many find lipreading helpful.
British Sign Language (BSL) is the preferred language of around 70,000 people in the UK. About 2 million people in Britain wear hearing aids, maybe another million would benefit from doing so. Almost all deaf and hard of hearing people rely on lipreading to some extent. Many combine signs from BSL with English in order to communicate.
