Schoolhas a different
look at life
CHILDREN at Pendle County Primary School were treated to an alternative day after being vis ited by a poet and taking part in a multi-faith class. Performance poet Paul Cookson spent time enter
taining both pupils and staff with an interactive poetry session and also ran workshops for individual age- groups. Headteacher Margaret Carrington was impressed by
Paul’s perfromance and throroughly enjoyed being part of the experience, she said: “We had a brilliant day with Paul, he gave a superb performance for all children and staff for the first hour in which everyone’s sides were aching with laughter - he was so amusing. “No member of staff or child got away with not join
ing in, particularly with the poem ‘Mr Moore, Mr Moore, creaking up the corridor’, and an hilarious time was had by all.” Conventional classes were even more distant for the
children of class one and class two. As part of multi faith week teacher Tim Nixon spent time teaching pupils about Islam, particularly the traditional ritual of washing, and joined in Mth the wearing of traditional dress. The school regularly looks at different faiths, recently having taught the children about the celebra tions for Chinese New Year. Our pictures show Mr Nixon with his Year 1 and 2
classes learning more about our multi-faith world and also poet Paul Cookson Mthsome of the children, (s)

STORYBOOK characters came to life at a Ribble Valley school. Pupils a t St Mary’s
Hall, Stonyhurst, dressed up as favourite book char acters as part of their cre ative writing lessons. The children, aged from
three to seven, were encouraged to “live the character” and chose from traditional fairytales as well as more modern sto ries. Their colourful cos
tumes included a flower fairy, Rapunzel, a princess, a doctor, a Dal matian dog, a Manchester
keting manager, said: “We are look ing for caring and courageous chil dren that deserve to be recognised for their personal achievements.” Parents, grandparents, teachers

United footballer and Fantastic Mr Fox. They also wrote a short
story describing their characters in detail. “Using this type of role
play really encourages the children to use their imag ination. “I t helps them to
include in more detail information about their characters in their own story-writing,” said Marie Lea, Key Stage 1 co-ordi nator at St Mary’s Hall. The pupils are pictured

and family friends have just three weeks to nominate a child that they feel deserves a very special treat. Do they help others at school, do they look after someone close to them or have they overcome illness or diffi culties that most adults would find a challenge? The only criteria is that the child must be under 14. Every child nominated will receive
a family ticket to Camelot. A panel of judges will select a winner from the Ribble Valley and they will then receive a very special invitation to a private ceremony during half-term, on Friday, June 3rd, at Camelot with
their friends and family. During the ceremony they will receive an hon orary knighthood from Camelot’s very own King Arthur, a framed cer tificate and a 12-month family pass.! In addition to becoming a “Sir” or
, “Lady”, winners will also receive a Lancashire and Blackpool Family Fun Passport entitling the lucky
• ivinners to enjoy some quality time together in one of the UK’s most family-friendly tourist destinations, courtesy of Lancashire and Black
pool Tourist Board and its members. Sandra Dempsey added: “Over the
years we have nominated, some extraordinary children and each child is as deserving as the next.” If you are over 18 and would like
to nominate a child that deserves a special treat, please send your nomi nation, explaining why they deserve to be knighted, to: “Knights in Shin ing Armour”, Alexander House, Sta tion Brow, Leyland, Lancashire, PR25 3NZ, or e-mail nominations to: knights@mtjpr.
