I AM saddened and dis mayed to hear of the latest application submitted for planning consent, which proposes to completely demolish the Slaidburn Methodist Chapel and adjoining Chapel House. To

be honest, I feel betrayed. The committee in charge of

this development has yet again failed to understand the feel ings of the many who have vig orously campaigned over the last five years to prevent such demolition happening. When

Betrayal over chapel demolition plan Letters Extra... Letters Extra

the fourth set of plans for the proposed conversion of the cur rent building into a village hall were presented earlier this year, I did not object, nor did many others, because we thought a compromise had been reached; namely that the facade was to be kept intact. The reason now given for

back peddling on this compro mise is apparently that there will be too much disruption on Chapel Street with scaffolding

Please help us keep

our village unspoilt I HOPE everyone who has the best inter ests of Slaidburn at heart realises what is going on, before it is too late. The planning applicants want to demol

ish the last remaining piece of the old chapel at Slaidburn, together with the chapel house, i.e. the facade on Chapel Street, which was stipulated to be kept, and substitute a “ copy” on the premise that it ’s difficult to keep walls of the orig inal building, and traffic lights will have to be used. This is nonsense, as present-day build

ing methods make it easy to retain part of a building, and we are all prepared to put up with traffic lights on Chapel Street in any case, for as long as is necessary. Certain parties seem determined to put

their indelible stamp of “modernity” on the village whatever happens, and spoil our conservation heritage for ever. The vil lage green will never he the same again. With village halls closing all over the

U K because of insufficient use and diffi culty in keeping them financially viable, this plan to foist a large new village hall on this little conservation village seems more of a white elephant in the making than ever. The perpetrators concerned even want to make the large hall even bigger by including a basement etc and have put in another planning application for this. Nearby village halls such as Tosside and Dunsop Bridge in the Hodder Valley have a struggle to keep going as it is. We have until November 30th to put in

strong objections, so there is not much time. We hope all who want Slaidburn to

remain as unspoilt as possible will put their objections in writing to planning applications numbers 320050969 and 320050968 to: Mr John Macholc, Building and Development Control

Manager, Kibble Valley Borough Council, Council Offices, Church Walk, Clitheroe, Lancashire, BB7 2RA. With your help, we can save at least a

part of this historic chapel, which has been in place since Georgian times.

A V E R IL K IN G -W IL K IN S O N Vandalism is caused

by drunken yobs! I AM writing regarding the spate of recent attacks on cars and property in the West View and Mitchell Street area of Clitheroe, mainly on Friday and Saturday nights. I t seams clear that these acts are by and

large carried out by those on their way home from drinking in the town centre. M y home has unfortunately been the

target of one of these attacks in recent months resulting in damage that I can ill afford to pay for. The solution seems pretty clear to me. Put gates on the bridge linking Hen-

and the like to support the facade during the building work and that traffic lights will be needed. This may well be true, but

surely A N Y building work on that site, so close to the road, will cause disruption to the traffic in any case. Furthermore, and playing

d e v i l ’s advocate for the moment, what would there be to stop the committee submit ting yet another set of plans

once the facade had been demolished. I think the resi dents of Slaidburn should be warned -They may well still get plan number one (the spaceship carbuncle of July 2002) by the back door it this current demolition proposal is passed. I will certainly object to this

new plan, and I urge everyone who has their misgivings about it to do the same.

Border protest was pointless

I AM appalled to see a bunch of middle-aged vandals removing signs from our area which my com munity charge has funded. I t is bad enough that our money

was wasted in the first place by erecting the signs, but now they will undoubtedly be replaced, probably at even greater cost and police time and ratepayers money will be used in order to bring "jus tice" to the vandals. Trying to bring back 31-year-

old boundaries is a futile gesture. As a Lancastrian bom and bred,

> 4

I regretted the dissolution of the country's then most populous county, but I feel that the people perpetrating this vandalism could better spend their energy defend ing OAPs who have been jailed for not paying their community charge. J IM W O L S T E N C R O F T , The Hazels, Wilpshire

thorn Park and Richmond Terrace, then lock these gates between, for example, 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. Obviously this would cause a small

amount of disruption for some. There would be no disruption to business. The alternative route is not that far out of the way. I would would be happy to put up with the minor disruption to safeguard my home and the welfare of my family. I t should not be acceptable that some

living in one area of town should have to worry about the safety of their car or home because some people from another area of town use their street to walk from the pub and cause damage because they feel like it, or they don't seem to be able to hold their beer without causing damage to other people’s property and affecting their quality of life Does anyone think as I do?

N A M E A N D A D D R E S S S U P P L IE D Is burial ground going

to serve wider area? IN various interviews and letters, Sabir Esa introduces red herrings, miscontrues the motives of objectors but has still not answered the questions that most concern the parishioners of Billington and Lang- ho:- for which groups of people is his burial ground intended, and why has he opted for the site at Northcote Road, Langho? The answers to these questions are cru

cial in planning terms. The key issue is one of sustainability and specifically the importance, endorsed by RVBC, by the county council and by central government (in its Planning Policy Statements 1 and 7), of minimising unnecessary car jour neys. I f the proposed burial ground is to serve

purely local needs and if a demand can be established, then it would be appropriate for the burial ground to be sited in the Rihble Valley. If, on the other hand, the facility far

exceeds Ribble Valley's requirements and is intended to serve a much wider area including the boroughs of Blackburn, Hyndburn, Burnley and Pendle, then alternative sites should be investigated (under the Government's sequential test ing principles) to see if a more appropriate and more central location can be found. The logical location for a traffic-gener

ating major woodland burial ground would .be closer to the main North East Lancashire towns, especially as Black burn, Hyndburn, Burnley and Pendle have given top prio rity to increasing woodland within or adjoining the main towns through the Red Rose Forest initia tive. Can Sabir Esa tell us: has he looked for

sites which would be much more centrally located for the main users of his burial ground? Or is the choice of the Northcote Road land simply the result of a business deal with the first developer he met who had a suitably sized plot of land he wanted to sell? I have no fear of being reminded of my mortality, heartily share his enthu siasm for woodland burials and commend to him, in preference to Francis Bacon, the quote from Hamlet used by the woodland burial movement - "passing through nature to eternity". I genuinely wish him success in estab

lishing a woodland burial site to meet his community’s needs, but not at the North cote Road site, which is entirely the wrong place for it.

Children have fun at Christmas fair

HARD-WORKING volunteers feel they are well on the way to completing a major facelift of a children’s playground in Sabden after another charity event at the weekend boosted their funds. The Sabden Play Park Trust is

more than half-way to its total of £28,000, which is being used to buy new swings and roundabouts for the popular Holme play area. A Christmas fair helped to

keep things ticking over and the group managed to collect £400 thanks to raffles, tombolas and a number of stalls. Publicity officer Mrs Jacqui

Ashton admitted she was very pleased with the efforts of the Trust. She said: “ I t was a good day and was very well attended. We

have now raised about £15,000 and have already paid for a new multi-frame for children to play on. Some of the equipment is old but with the number of children who live in the area, the play ground is very popular. “ I would like to publicly thank

the volunteers, everyone who came along and the companies who sponsored us.” A further fund-raising event is

planned for Friday night at St Mary’s Church Hall, in Whalley Road, where pop band Vivid will be entertaining visitors. Admis sion is £5. Picture shows Bethany Ashton,

Lily Davies and William Holmes with Father Christmas at the Sabden Play Park Trust Christ mas fair. (D191105/3)

Help find missing Kim

A RECENTLY-RETIRED rac ing greyhound has been missing in the Ribble Valley for almost six weeks. Kevin and Marie Smyth are

anxious to find Kim (pictured), who won several trophies during her competitive career at the Belle Vue Stadium in Manchester. After the greyhound suffered a

leg injury the couple, who bought her from Ireland, decided to retire her from racing and had looked forward to spending time with her at their Valley home. On the early evening of Satur

day, October 8th, Mr Smyth took the black dog, which has a white patch on her chest, for a walk down the pumping station area of West Bradford. Kim went chasing after a rabbit and has not been seen by the couple since. Kim was however spotted by an

angler at the River Ribble near Brockhall Village a few weeks ago. The couple have carried out a

massive search in the area and have put posters up appealing for help in tracing their pet. Anyone with information can ring them on 01200 422815.
