i f TRINNY WOODALL and SUSANNAH CONSTANTINE Susannah: “I have a very traditional

Christmas. It’s a bit schizoplmenic because my parents-in-law are Danish, and so every other year we have a Scandinavian Christ mas where we open our presents the night before and the Lord Jesus does not even enter the house. Normally I ’m a bit more religious and I like to go to church on the day. But in both houses, everyone gets their stockings on Christmas Eve from Santa, and we open them all together the follow ing morning. Then i t ’s off to church fol lowed by a huge lunch. We then carry on eating for the next couple of weeks.” Trinny: “I have a house in the moimtains

in France which I go to every other year. We always go for a walk down the lane and around 11.30pm i t stops snowing and there’s that real silence, which I love. “Because of all the snow on the trees,

When you face the festive season alone

WILL you be crowding around a heavily-laden table with your family this Christ mas, or facing a ready-meal for one? The festive season is tradi

tionally a time for families to enjoy each other’s company, but many people face the holidays without their relatives. But whether you are recently

bereaved, estranged from your loved ones or simply living a long way away, there are ways to cope with a family-free Christmas.

■ THE HIGH-PRESSURE HOLIDAY Whatever your circum

stances, Christmas is a high- pressure holiday, says Relate counsellor Denise Knowles. “Christmas is such a poten

tial hot spot for arguments. We hang on to this lovely ideal, but we forget about what the reali ty is actually like. “The difference between the

two can be as vast as the Atlantic.” If you’re going to make a

momentous decision about where to spend Christmas which will upset the norm - such as announcing tha t you and your partner will be spend ing the holiday on a tropical beach instead of watching the Queen’s message with Auntie Shirley - Denise says it’s best to do it well in advance. “Don’t leave i t to the last

minute,” she stresses. Clinical psychologist Linda

Blair agrees that it’s not a good idea to suddenly turn up and pretend everything is rosy. “Christmas is not a good time

to pretend - we’re enclosed in small spaces, the weather is bad and we’re out of touch with each other’s behaviour. But it is a good time to reach out to peo ple you wish you were in con tact with.” Blair says a phone call or a

handwritten letter explaining your feelings will help restore communication.

’I THE festive season can feel pretty lonely

ticularly difficult for those who have recently lost a partner, child or other family member. Linda Blair says it’s impor

tant to acknowledge your grief and recognise that this Christ mas will be difficult. “If you’ve had a loss, then

you’ll be feeling the hole that person has left. I t ’s important not to change too many other things.” Unless you’re completely

alone, she recommends keeping to your usual routines, but incorporating one change - like altering your Christmas menu, opening your presents at a dif ferent time or in-viting new peo ple to share the day with you. “Don’t deny your feelings. Sit

down and write a letter to the deceased person telling them about what’s happened. I t ’s a very cathartic thing to do.” Denise says th a t if an

anniversary falls over the holi day period, think in advance about how you want to spend that day. “Don’t feel guilty if you want

to have fun and enjoy yourself. Call on your family and friends for support - and let them know what it means to you to have them there.”

■ REBATE’S TIPS: • I t ’s OK to talk about the

person you are grieving for. Reminisce about Christmases past, other good times, and how they enriched your life. By doing this, you are giving per mission to others to do likewise.

M GOING SOLO If you are newly single the I

festive season can feel pretty lonely. But it doesn’t have to be | that way. Linda says you can approach I

Christmas in a new way by spending it in a different place. “A new place can be an easier

option. You’ll be happiest and best-adjusted if you take a little time to investigate new tradi- | tions. • Continued on next page
