Lowry trip well worth the effort
NABUCCO; Opera North; the Lowry Sal
ford Quays
I DON’T usually like con cert performances of operas because I like the whole idea of opera being acted. In particular I like Opera
North’s consistently enter taining productions, which are always well-staged with excellent designs. But the company is mak
ing a -valiant effort to retain and please its audiences while its home base at the Grand Theatre is being restored, with the creation of a new opera centre. So I made the trip to the
Lowry and I was rewarded with a rediscovery of Verdi’s wonderful music, not just the famous “Va, penaero”, the chorus of the Hebrew slaves, but also many of the other arias, quartets and varieties of singing from the eight prin cipals. Conductor Da-vid Parry
led the orchestra in a dra matic rendition of this fas cinating opera and I was almost reconciled to a con cert performance.
