I t was the prefect illustration of how the

air ambulance, based at Blackpool Airport, can he a t the scene of an emergency, no matter how remote, ■within minutes. On board paramedics can then administer medical aid a t the scene and during the short flight to hospital. The previous helicopter, now retired from

service, has attended himdreds of incidents in the remote and rural Ribble Valley since

■the service was launched in 1999. The new ■ helicopter is smoother, quieter and faster. On'its first day in service i t attended

ing Lynda Brislin, charity chief executive,, . .

said: "We have always been known as the fastest emergency service, however the new helicopter enables the N'WAA to cut its maximum flying time from 10 to eight n ^ - utes to the nearest appropriate hospital anywhere in the region. Although we only transported one patient to hospital bn Thursday, the speed with which medical care can be deli'vered is crucial, and flying 20 knots faster than the old helicopter, we are able to cut down the time it takes for our paramedics to reach an incident." The region's only medical air emergency

service and registered charity was able to upgrade its helicopter after receiving a £500,000 residual legacy from the estate of the late Katie Caine, from Thornton Cleve- leys, a year ago. The new helicopter was named “Katie” in her memory and blessed in a ceremony conducted by the Rev. Ken neth Clapham, Vicar of Over Kellet parish in Camforth. Lynda Brislin added: "'We are eternally

indebted to our benefactor, Katie Caine. The new EC135 has so many benefits over our current helicopter that in essence we ■will be able to offer a far superior sendee for the people of, and ■visitors to, the region.” Covering Lancashire, Greater Manches

ter, Cheshire, Merseyside and Cumbria, the N'WAA offers a vital service seven days-a- week, 365 days-a-year across 5,500 square miles serving a residential population of seven million. Costing over £ 1 million a year to maintain, the helicopter attends all major road incidents. On average the NWAA is called out four times a day, rising up to 10 in the summer. Thumbs down to demolition plans

CONTROVERSIAL plans to demolish Slaidburn Chapel’s historic facade have been halt ed by Ribble Valley planners. Members of Ribble Valley

Borough Council’s Planning and Development Committee refused an application for con servation area consent to demolish the chapel and chapel house facade when they met on Thursday. They also advised the appli

cant that the centre must be built using random rubble nat ural stone, which is thought to be in keeping with other build ings in the ■village. ■ Planners agreed that argu

ments in favour of the facade demolition are “limited and

unconvincing”. However, an application for the partial dem olition, alterations and exten sion a t the Chapel, Chapel House and Sunday School, Church Street, Slaidbum, was approved. The borough council’s direc

tor of development stated that this proposal would contribute to the solution of community, social and economic problems. ■ It would also have an accept

able impact on the character and appearance of Slaidburn Conservation Area, the land scape and character of the For est of Bowland Area of Out standing Natural Beauty and residential amenity.
