IF you ask a random group of motorists which accessory they value most on their cars and then collate the answers, dis counting smart-alecky replies like ‘engine’, ‘brakes’ and ‘tax disc’, the same items will come up repeatedly. We’re talking about the few

key must-have trimmings that aren’t integral to a car’s basic operation but that we’d prefer to have all the same. The mod ern classics are ABS, alloy wheels, air-conditioning and a CD-player. Features that leap out at you from any options list and whose absence leaves a yawning hole in a car’s standard specification. Features that come as standard on all the models in the value-driven Vauxhall Active special edition range. Vauxhall are offering Active-
badged versions of their Corsa, Meriva, Astra and new Zafira models. The thinking behind them isn’t revolutionary in any

THE concept of the Jaguar S- TYPE is so cosy, so delightfully retro, that in its Inspector Morse appeal, it’s easy to forget that it’s a bang up to date, technological showcase for the Coventry compa ny.
That’s why many will have diffi
culty coming to terms with the S- TYPE Sport, a concept akin to a Werther’s Original Energy Drink or a General Synod Extreme Sports Team. Olde-worlde charm and 21st century dynamism in one package? That’s what Jaguar would like us to believe. Once upon a time, BMW, Mer
cedes and latterly Audi cleaned up in this sector of the market, their upmarket variants of the 5 Series, E-class and A6 proving irresistible to UK buyers. With the original S- TYPE, Jaguar was able to fight back with a de-chromed Sport ver sion. Nowadays the 3.0-litre V6 Sport starts at £31,995 whilst the 2.7-litre Diesel version costs £32,895 and there’s even a 4.2-litre V8 Sport at £38,595. All feature the latest S-TYPE
tweaks. There’s an aluminium rather than steel bonnet to improve weight distribution. Much of the fussy detailing has been reduced or stripped away altogether for a lean er more muscular look. The grille is lower and broarder, the bumper inserts have been reshaped and the side sills are less prominent. There are numerous changes but you may be hard pushed to spot them. I t ’s very much a case of subtle evoloution rather than revoloution. Dealers are already crowing
about the positive effect on sales of the 2.7-litre diesel V6 engine. Cer tainly, its performance levels (0- GOmph in 8.1s on the way to 143mph) mean that buyers don’t
have to make too many compro mises. The existing 240bhp 3.0-litre AJ-V6 meanwhile, has been improved for “enhanced driveabili ty” and a fuel economy improve ment of around 8%: yoii should be able to achieve over 25mpg in nor mal use. The 4.2-litre is the S- TYPE’s biggest engine, offered in supercharged form in the range topping E. If you want your Sport to live up to its name, this will be the unit for you. Recent price realignments to this
car’s major competitors has seen them offer more favourable value for money of late, but the Jaguar still comfortably undercuts equiva lent Sport variants of the BMW 530i and 545i by at least £2,000 whilst at the same time offering far more generous standard equip ment. Nonetheless, many manufac turers have trodden this route with limited success. In a bid to ensure the S-TYPE
Sport doesn’t suffer the same fate, Jaguar has opted for a styling pack age that is at the same time subtle, yet distinctive. Gone are the acres of chrome that normally surround the grille, replaced instead by body- colour paint. As well as the grille surround, the bumper blades and number plate plinth have been de- chromed. This impact is enhanced by the addition of some seriously purposeful 18-inch ‘Monaco’ or ‘Indianapolis’ (your choice) two- piece alloy wheels manufactured by BBS. Finished in silver, the seven- spoke wheels use titanium fixing screws and are fitted with monster Pirelli P-Zero low profile tyres. Other features include sports sus
pension with uprated springs and dampers, plus larger ventilated front brake discs. Inside, you’ll find leather sports seats with eight-way
way - in fact, we’ve seen it all before with Breeze and Energy special editions - but i t has proven to be remarkably suc cessful. In a nutshell, the Active models are positioned toward the lower end on their respec tive model line-ups on price but they feature a healthy haul of equipment Including the ‘big four’ of ABS, alloys, air-con and a CD stereo, plus zero per cent finance. Range-topping equipment
and base model prices form a combination at which few buy ers can afford to turn up their noses but Vauxhall often go even further with supplemen tary offers that increase their special editions’ appeal. The Active derivatives look like good value from all sorts of angles, not least the one that reveals how many entry-level buyers specify alloy wheels, air- conditioning and the like from the options list anyway. With a Active, they can get all the

trimmings in a ready-to-roll package for less money. Things get underway at the
cheaper end of the Active col lection with the £9,495 1.0-litre' 12-valve Corsa Active. The Corsa is a solid little Supermi ni, perhaps not as exciting as, some of its competitors in stan dard form but in Active guise it makes a compelling case. You can expect a whopping 64mpg average from this model, so vis its to the filling station will be a rare event. At this price, many rivals offer basic trim levels, but the Corsa Active comes with body-coloured bumpers, mir rors and mouldings, smart 15- inch alloy wheels, air condition ing, white sports dials, a stereo- radio/CD player with steering wheel controls, a leather cov ered steering wheel, electric
front windows, an alloy-effect centre console, platinum- coloured seatbelts and dark tail lights, plus a choice of Platinum or Blue Twist trim. Engine choices are l.Oi 12v and 1.2i 16v petrol, a 1.7 CDTi 16v diesel or a 1.4i 16v automatic petrol model. If you want something more
versatile but of similar size, then it’s worth checking out the 1.4 16v Meriva Active, priced at £12,300. The Meriva has been a key protagonist in the development of the supermini- MPV market sector, which insiders believe will really take off over the next few years. Ford’s Fusion and Fiat’s Idea have staked their claim too but the Meriva is equally adept with its versatile FlexSpace seating system. If a standard
supermini can’t quite cut it space wise, a car like this is a sound alternative. Engine-wise, there’s a choice of 1.4i 16v, 1.6i 16v or 1.7CDTi 16v engines. Equipment runs to air condi tioning, dark tinted Solar Pro tect glass, 16-inch seven-spoke alloys, a stereo-radio/CD play er, steering wheel audio con trols, a leather covered Steering wheel, FlexSpace rear seating, chrome effect instrument sur rounds and Charcoal or Blue Enigma interior trim. The latest Zafira is bigger
still, offering larger compact- MP'V dimensions and the Flex7 seating system to ensure that you can get the most out of (and into) them. According to the standard price list the Zafi ra Active can be yours from £15,695 with the entry-level
1.6-litre 16-valve engine. Stan dard kit includes air condition ing, 16-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels, air conditioning, alloy- effect roof rails, a stereo- radio/CD player, steering wheel audio controls, dark-tinted Solar Protect glass, body- coloured bumpers, mirrors and mouldings, full-size front and second row curtain airbags and a choice of Charcoal or Grey Tabita trim. package continues to look strong. The price here is from £13,675, which gets you the 1.4-litre 16v model. Petrol engines in the five-door Astra Active include 1.4i 16v and 1.6i 16v, plus a 1.8i 16v automatic, along with Vauxhall’s acclaimed 90PS CDTi diesel powerplant.

power adjustment for the driver, a leather sports steering wheel and aluminium facia trim. Dynamic Stability Control is fitted to all ver sions, and the four-litre car also gets Jaguar’s acclaimed Computer Active Technology Suspension (the cheesily acronymed CATS) as a standard fitment. Opt for the 4.2- litre model (which makes sixty in 6.2 seconds on the way to 146mph) and you may well find yourself needing it. More clever technology comes in
the form of what Jaguar calls its Adaptive Restraint Technology System (ARTS for short). The idea here has been to create a system that avoids the increasing number of airbag-related injuries by sensing the particular position of each front seat occupant and the particular characteristics of any given impact. The ARTS system uses four ultra sonic detectors to determine the position of the front seat passenger and an electronic sensor in the seat track to determine the position of the driver. Get too close to the fas cia and the airbags simply won’t deploy. The passenger seat also has a weight sensor that not only dis abled the airbag if there’s no one sitting in it but also determines whether and to what extent the airbag should be deployed on small er or lighter occupants (children for example) who often suffer most from airbag-related accidents. The system can detect whether or not front seat passengers are wearing seatbelts and it can vary the airbag deployment based on the severity of the impact. All from a decision making process completed in just 10 milliseconds. In aiming for a younger audience.
Jaguar is changing its whole image - and it’s a change for the better.
