JUST a few simple checks on a reg­ ular basis would go a long way to preventing many breakdowns, especially in winter. Easy to say; harder to find the

for example, has ins truc ted its p a tro ls , where ap p ro p r ia te , to carry out a series of brief checks at every breakdown. B u t the f ru s tra t in g thing for


many drivers s tran d ed by th e roadside is th a t the breakdown should not have happened - the motoring associations reckon tha t around half of their call-outs could be avoided by regular servicing. In addition, a specific pre-winter


service check should ensure th a t vehicles are in good mechanical and electrical condition to face whatever the season might bring. Basic checkpoints ideally would include everything from lights and


tyres to battery and starter motor. Tyres should always be carefully


checked as worn treads are illegal as well as potentially lethal - for you and innocent bystanders, as well as other road users. Battery failme is one of the most


common causes of breakdown - drained from leaving the lights on, as we all do from time to time or simply dead. R a d ia to r s might be sp o r tin g


leaks or cracks - take a look. I t ’s a lso w o r th te s t in g the


strength of the anti-freeze, if there is any in there. Windscreen wiper blades should


be replaced after a year’s use, so check th em o u t as winter approaches for wear and tear. Exhausts work hard all year, so


i t’s worth including this important piece of equipment on your check­ list, not just as winter approaches, but before a holiday as well.
