“It made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck!” commented one member of the audience. People sat on the edge of their seats! The psychological drama “In

Two Minds”, by Richard Har ris, was performed by Downham Stage Two. Just four actors held the audi

ence throughout the tense and intriguing story of Annie, David, Gina and the mysterious Anthony Hewlett. The pace was fast, but varied,

ing production depended entire ly upon good teamwork. The action was broken up into short time sequences, which relied upon exact lighting and sound, unobtrusive stage management, quick entrances and exits and snappy costume changes. What could have been disjointed was, in fact, very smoothly and effec tively executed. Lucy Scott, who played

skilfully building the tension between the young couple and their eccentric neighbour, whose odd behaviour caused suspicion. This successful and entertain

Annie, portrayed a caring, sym pathetic young woman, who became increasingly worried by the strange events. This was a very natural and

believable performance. The energetic performance of Ashley Williams, as David, was a pleas ure to watch. His good timing and humour blended beautifully with his ris

ing frustration and anticipation of danger. I t was good to see Ashley back “on the boards” after a long holiday! Gerry Purchase sustained the

military cool of Anthony Hewlett throughout, but gradu ally and cleverly let us see the more vulnerable side of his char acter. Gina, the cheeky cleaner, was

played by Deborah Tudisco. She was confident, but defensive and her excellent facial expressions led us to believe that there was more to Gina than met the eye. An interesting and clever set,

with hidden cupboard, was built by Dan Bradbury. Effective props, furniture and stage man agement was provided by Stephanie and Aled Brewerton, an excellent choice of atmos pheric music was made by David Scott, who also controlled the lighting, and interesting sound effects were produced by David King. All these combined to confirm

the teamwork which made this such a good production, but the audience’s enjoyment of this play would not have been possi ble without the commitment and hard work of Rachel Scott, the director. This was her first production

for Downham Stage Two and it was an accomplished achieve ment. I, for one, hope we see many

KING G E O R G E S HALL THE HOME OF LIVE PERFORMANCE

BLACKBURN All time great

THE founding father of British bufoonery is cele brated in a new produc tion coming to the Grand Theatre, Blackpool. “The Life and Times of

Joseph Grimaldi” is the story of English clowning and comedy. Grimaldi was the greatest pan- tomimist and clown of all time, acknowledged by the fact that every clown is now known as “Joey” in his honour. His physical

and satirical humour is the root of all British buf foonery from Dan Leno and Stan Laurel to Basil Fawlty and Little Britain. Source material for the

new production comes from ’’The Memoirs of Grimaldi”, edited by “Boz”, the pen-name of a youthful Charles Dickens. He was an admirer of Grimaldi’s work, as were many other Regency celebrities such as Lord

Byron and the Prince Regent himself. This live ly and colourful tale is full of humour, history and emotion. This spectacu lar production is on for two nights only a t The Grand Theatre, on Friday and Saturday, January 6th and 7th, starting at 7- 30 p.m. For ticket prices, call the box office on 01253 290190 or visit the website on www.black- poolgrand.co.uk).
