.with your sports team of Edward Lee, Chris Boden, Phil Simpson and Adrian Capsticif sponsor rally ace

A CLITHEROE man rapidly gain ing national acclaim in rally-cross has won an important sponsorship deal. Castle Cement has agreed to spon

sor Simon Horton and his Metro GTi, covering his race entry fees as he competes in his second season in the sport. ' In his first season, he came ninth nationally and is hopeful of better ing that this time around.

' , Simon, 25, has been rally driving i l

for a few years and has made a seam less switch to rally-cross, which takes place on circuits across the country and in some cases, in Ireland and Holland. He is taking part in two champi onships - the BTRDA Rally Series

and the Rally-cross Super Series - which means 14 races in total during a season which has started promis ingly for Simon. Simon was previously sponsored

by MG but, with the recent demise of Rover, he was grateful when Cas tle Cement stepped into the breach with fresh sponsorship. “I have to say I surprised myself ,

with my performances in my first season. This season has started very well but sponsorship is very impor tant for all drivers competing in the championships. I’m extremely grate ful to Castle Cement for lending their support,” he said. Simon takes part in competitions

at weekends but during the week has to earn a wage. He has recently left

an IT sales manager’s job and is cur rently looking for something new. “The very top drivers can look at going professional or at least semi- pro, but I’m not quite at that stage yet -

though I’d dearly love.to reach

that situation,” he added Gareth Price, general manager at

Castle’s Ribblesdale works said: “Simon is showing great potential and we’d be delighted if our help can propel him to even greater heights. He’s representing Clitheroe around the country, which has to be good for the town.” Pictured Simon Horton who is

CLITHEROE FC are planning to bestow groundsman and all-round club stalwart Keith Lord with the kind of tribute, befitting oyer 50 years long service. Thoughts on the matter have been in the offing since Keith announced

|.jjf.that he was looking to retire from ■

; ■ Hhe position of groundsman, and all round behind the scenes servant to the club, at the end of this season, and vice chairman Mark Gidlow has already nominated him for a local hero award through the Football Foundation Scheme. But he and the rest of the commit

tee admit th a t the club have a respons ib ility to acknowledge

- Keith’s tirele^ efforts over the years in a more permanent and memorable form.

' ", A testimonial inviting past and

present players to play in his honour is a possibility, something in a simi-

lar vein to what Blackburn Rovers’ Tony Parkes had on Tuesday evening at Ewdod Park, While other ideas involve a more permanent trib- .

■ utc at Shawbridge. ^ “Keith has done a fantastic job for

the club over the years, he has given great service and made a significant contribution to local football, and it is only fitting that he should have a tribute that befits his tireless effort,, said Gidlow. .

. “I’ve spoken to Keith and asked him to stay on in some capacity at

; the club, and he has already intimat ed he would support the club wher- ever necessary, to help provide guid- ance and lend his experience to club: - ■ ■ “He still wants to be involved and

Keith Lord and skipper Adam Gardner are pictured with the North West Countiers’ League First Division trophy at the end of the 2003/04 season

I would love him to have an input, perhaps working in partnership with a new pitch man, while he purely looked after the overall maintenance of the ground itself.” The club has this week announced

season ticket details. They will cost £100.80 (£115) after the,end of June) vvith concessions at £60 (£70). Meanwhile, last Sunday saw the

first team take on the potential play ers for next season’s youth side, and a closer match than expected was wit nessed.

, The first team, featuring Paul

Byron in a playing capacity, won 5- 2, but the Under 18'Wolves and Padihain players, as well as a couple of Hurst Green’s championship side, gave Byron’s men a good game. Only fitness was lacking as g o a l- ,

keeper Tom Sharp, Lee Abbott and Liam Gidlow and Allan Goar all put in strong performances, vvith Goar

and Terry Fothergill netting. Glitherde’s goals came from Gary

Jackson and Ghris Whittinghani, while Byron had an over-ambitious attempt at scoring from the halfway line when the reserve side had forced drastic measures after drawing the scores level!

,. All in all it was a successful outing enjoyed by a ll, competitive y e t played in a friendly spirit, boding well for team relations next season. As yet, a reserve team boss has yet

to be named, but a decision is expected vvithin the next tvyo weeks. Gidlow has been pleased with the

local response to the return of the reserve team, as within the last week he. has had another. 10 players regis ter an interest. Further reserve team games are in

the pipeline for pre-season.'Anyone interested in joining' the team should contact Mark Gidlow (07775 552423).

Busy Dolphins hit twice

CLITHEROE Dolphins had a busy couple of days of swim ming last week that saw both their teams earn solid second place finishes. The local team travelled to Blackpool for their last gala of the

season, where three of the four teams, including Glitheroe, could still win the league. In the end Glitheroe finished second, but not before the gala

lived up to expectations with a three-way tussle throughout that saw Glitheroe edge into a five-point lead with one event left. So when Guy Isherwood brought the

cannon team home in first by a finger nail, th ey looked to have secured a famous victory. But it wasn’t to be, as a harsh decision disqualified their cannon effort and saw them lose eight points. Individual \vinners were William Gap-

stick, Elizabeth Highton, Louise High- ton, Tom Carter, Megan Phillip and Hannah Pym. .

Then on Saturday the club's junior

team, s t ill iii the hunt for a play-off place, travelled to Preston and achieved the coveted second spot in the league. Blackburn were the runaway winners

but'after a fascinating tu^le and a hesi tant start, the Dolphins came good in the second half and won by seven points. • Individual winners were Tom Carter,

Harry Paige, Luke Tasker, Sain Buchanan, Anna Carey, Jacob Abra hams and Kara Singleton. The relay win ners were the boys’ Under 11 freestyle and girls Under 12 medley teams............
