I t was a busy weekend at Whalley Golf Club with club member Terry Fildes finishing in first place in both weekend events. The course was in excellent condi tion and the weather proved to be a

-winnertoo. On Saturday, members played in the

three-man team competition. Fildes,. playing alongside "old

stager" Peter Benson and Eddie Gier- at, were the winners by the narrowest of .margins with 77 points with Pat Crawford, Roger Armitage and George Blenkinship taking second place tvith 76 points. There was a three-way tie in third

place, with 71 points, between the teams of Stuart Dawson, Eric Lord and Peter Shaw; Colin T. Elliott, Trevor Thomber and Daniel Holgate and Ian Hartley, Roger Altham and Jake Chadwick. On Sunday, the first men’s invitation

saw the partnership of Terry Fildes and Peter Thome win virith 45 points. A card play-off saw Mel Earle and

Dave Smith take second place vrith 43 points from Dave Flanagan and Arthur Lord. Mytton Fold members, John Berry

and Bob Scott, playing with Whalley members Daniel Holgate and Dave Wetton had obviously used all their best shots in the morning having played in the Fairhaven Golf Club Open Fourball with Roger Altham and Dave Yeoman. First out at 7-40 a.m., their magnif

icent score of 47 points, played from the championship tees, led the field for the entire day and they were declared worthy winners. Following the prize presentation, a

large number of members stayed for an excellent dinner and the day was rounded off by a never-to-be-forgotten karaoke hosted by Club Manager Julia Duffy and committee member Roger Altham. "rhe Whalley team of Club Captain

Wolves narrowly miss out on title

CLITHEROE Wolves Under 12s lost their chance of winning the Warburtons Youth League when • they went down 1-0 to Pendle For

est. • They put up a brave performance

but had to defend for most of the

match. This they did, heroically at times,

: and also rode'their luck when the opposition hit both posts in the first

half.. The defence held firm until six

minutes from time when a fierce shot

into the top left-hand corner of the net gave victory deservedly to Pen dle Forest. The team was obviously dejected

at the end, but all players deserve credit for battling to the end. The team then needed victory

against Junior Clarets to have a chance of the runners-up spot in the league. . Understandably with the draining

performance in the previous match and the length of the season, tired players struggled to find any form.

Coming from behind, however,

with goals from Hopkins and East- wood, the team were level at the break. Strong defending was again neces

sary at the start of the second halt and Charlton played his part, being named man of the match for the sec ond game in succession. Meyler finally calmed the nerves

when he gave the Wolves the lead again, and Clarkson's goal directly from a corner sealed the victory in the last minute.

Stephen Green, Kevin Walker, Richard Crossley and Andrew' Thompson finished in a creditable eighth place in the ELGA Handicap Finals held at Clitheroe Golf Club on Saturday. John Wetton was the leading light

at Clitheroe as he won the Miners Lamp with 39 points. A multiple card play-off saw David

Jackson (38) take second spot ahead of Scott Milne, Tim Czerwonka and Tony Wall.

The Spring Open Fourball was dom

inated by visitors with a pairing from Leigh and Eleesemere taking first place with 45 points.

TERRY-FIC! Fildes scores double win at Whalley GC

By Edward Lee Home member M. Jones partnered

N. Kennedy (Great Harwood) into second spot with 44 edging out Simon Cherry (Clitheroe) and J. Jenkinson (Saddleworth) on a card play-off. The remaining three nett prizes all ■

went to visitors while Clitheroe’s Andrew Walmsley partnered Burn ley’s Andrew Samuels to the gross prize. S. Clash totalled 40 points to win

the Men’s Hall of Fame competition at Stonyhurst Park by a shot from T. Lee. Julie Stephenson emerged as the

clear winner of the first qualifying round for the Longworth Cup at Whalley GC. She carded 93-25-68 to lead the way

as Janet Sharp (105-32-'73), Lorna Slinger (93-20-73) and Agnes Seery (108-35-73) all joined her in the next stage of the competition. Helen Maginn (80-5-75) topped

Division One of the ladies competition at Clitheroe by a shot from Hein Cook and Edith Child. Rosemary Sims (102-25-77). needed

a card play-off win in Division Two to edge out Lauraine Wall and Jane Chandler. .. Jannette Ranson (109-36-73) was

the clear winner of Division 'Three with Elizabeth Barnes and Anne Hartley claiming the other prizes. James Fitton carded 93-2M7 to win

the junior medal at Clitheroe. James Kenyon (92-22-70) was run

ner-up ahead of Jacob Foley.(101-28- 73).

The eight member clubs of the '

Howard Rigg Properties North West Seniors Golf League have now. com pleted their first month of competition with most of the eight teams having, played at least three matches.

. ■These initial matches have produced

a few remarkable results, among the most noticeable being the 6-0 thrash ing of champions Wilpshire by Myt ton Fold and also the 6-0 win for last season's bottom club Blackpool De ■yere over Ingol.

| - .

De Yere have won more matches this season with their two wins out of

. two, than they won in total last year. . After the shock of the opening fix

ture, last season's champions Wilp shire are starting to mount a come back and their next match against the inform De 'Vere might-give a pointer as to the destination of this year's trophy. It is, as they say early, days yet and

a good result by Mytton Fold at Nel son could also prove to be a deciding factor. .

This all adds to 2005 being a more

closely run contest than of the past few years and everyone is looking for

ward with relish to'the rest of the sea son.

Disappointing loss for Whalley aces

■WHALLEY Tennis Club A had a disappointing defeat in the cup first round at the weekend against Burnley A.

: .

Both teams won two rubbers, but Burnley went through to the next round by virtue of having won

more games. However, Whalley B comfortably beat Blackburn

Northern C. Martin Haworth and Gordon Pimperton won both ,

their matches, while David and Andrew Walters won one and lost one to give Whalley ■victory. Blackburn Northern B gained revenge, fielding a

very strong side, they cruised past Whalley C, winning all four games. In the mixed competition, defending champions

Whalley A beat Parkwood 5-3 in a repear of last year’s final. Richard Lambert and Cathy Green won all four sets,

playing some sparkling tennis. The set won by Gordon Pimperton and Karen Farn-.-^C '

hill gave Whalley the win. The newly-formed B team also continued their win ning start to the season with a similar scoreline against

Sunnyhurst B. Robert Houseman and Helen Maher, and husband

and wife team Martin and Kathy Haworth, continued the impressive start to the season against an experi-

encedteam. ■ » ,, •*
