Lancashire Economic Partnership, said: “We have met ivith the consortium and with rep resentatives of the respective local authori ties. We have been asked to respect the confi dentiality of the current negotiations and to
■ act as facilitators of the process. “Financial backers have comniitted an ini tial amount of £17m. to fund stage one of
- the tour sites. Sites in China, Sri Lanka and two in England have been identified and sites are being visited by technical teams and
financial backers. If East Lancashire tails to secure the race
course, it ivill not come to England at all . 1^
The racecourse will be a major boost for
East Lancashire as it will be the first pur pose-built racecourse created in the UK this century and only the second since the 19th
Century. New technology will be used to create an •
all-weather grass surface, enabling the con sortium to guarantee up to 60 days racing a year (normally 20 days Mth up to 20% lost through adverse weather). Complementary facilities could include a
five- star hotel, a theme park, associated retail opportunities, stabling, an equestrian centre and an educational “experience”. The partnership will meet; with the finan
ciers and project team on their return from the Far East in the next few weeks to joint ly consider the next step.

bined time of 141.47 seconds. Commenting on his first
gold medal, Jonniesaid: “I am thrilled, especially after a slightly disappointing first run. After being a second down, I knew I had to pull it out of the bag for the second sprint.”
The Wild Water Racing
World Cup Series started on Sunday and runs until May 29th, with the latest event, a classic over a longer course, taking place at Washburn in Harrogate yesterday. As well as competing for
medals in each individual race, paddlers also score points, with the best four scores from six forming their overall World Cup points
tally. Jonnie will also be in action
at Castle Connell, Ireland, over the weekend, before trav elling to Bala, Wales, the fol lowing week for the last stage,
