Author celebrates two top literary awards

READ author Linda Sawley is celebrating after receiving two prestigious awards. . . . The former nurse, who has writ

ten three books, was pleasantly sur prised when she attended the David St John Thomas Charitable Awards ac Harrogate recently. • During the luncheon event, which

was held in conjunction with Writ ers Magazine, Mrs Sawley was pre sented with the Grand Award in Self Publishing and the Communi ty Cup for Publishing for Charity, for her book “The Key”. A historical drama set in

Clitheroe and Burnley during the ^ 1880s, the author was stunned when she was awarded with the national grand prize of a shield and £1,000 for her latest publication, along ivith £200 for her chosen charity. “I knew I had won the charity ■

award, but when I was told about the grand award it was such a shock. “I was absolutely delighted,” she

added. . Mrs Sawley, who supports the charities Derian House Children’s

Hopice and the Ribble .Valley Ladies’ Luncheon Club (who donate to children ivith cancer), will be donating her prize money between them.

working on her latest book. Our- pictures shows Mrs Sawley

with Brian MacArthur, who pre sented her with the prizes and David St John Thomas, founder of the awards event, (s)

Club reports on a year of success

“A HIGHLY successful year” was the verdict after the Ribblesdale Camera Club’s annual meeting. Club chairman Jeff Cowling said

his objective was to create an atmosphere of enjoyment in pho tography and participation in the club’s activities. The club could now provide

everything needed to manipulate or retouch pictures from digital cam eras or scans of negatives and slides and to print out pictures for mount ing on board with window mounts. However, the older, “wet” develop ing process for black-and-white . prints would be retained. Treasurer John Bradley reported

a good financial situation, which had allowed purchase of essential equipment. An “Awards for AH”

grant had been neutral in effect, but the projector purchased had proba bly been partly responsible for an increased membership. The club membership now stood at 43, equal to the record of about 20 years ago. Secretary Ken Geddes thanked

the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times for its support by printing reports of the club’s activities, which seemed ■ generally read and enjoyed; All officers and committee mem

bers continued in their positions, including John Fletcher as vice- chairman and Dean Weaver as pro gramme secretary, who were both co-opted during the year. Internai and external competitions continue in the capable hands of Ian Black and Denis Kendal, while Stuart Willis was welcomed onto the com

mittee. Other committee members are Mike Caddy, Graham Dudley, Raymond Greenwood and Jo Creighton. A final item on the agenda was

requests for future meetings. A descent down Gaping Gill by winch and a barbecue will be the high lights of the summer. Among other meetings will be visits to Slaidburn Church and Whalley and two walks. Workshops, which will be held on the third Thursday of each month, will include making panora mas and on close-up photography. , For more information about the club, which welcomes photogra phers of all abilities and experience, phone Ken Geddes on 01200 423474.

Funeral Directors ‘Peaceluiven ’ Chapel of Rest 'ARw.vpjjsfonia. \ ' New home for post office after temporary closure

SABDEN post office has re-opened following temporary closure. Now based at Village News, in

Whalley Road, the branch is to be run by Richard and Ginny Capstick and their son, Chris (pictured). The couple, who took over the store a year ago, said they were keen to

take the post office on as the closure was a terrible thing for the village. The post office lease, which was

advertised by Post Office Ltd, has been available since last November

after the previous subpostmaster resigned. Rural Transfer Adviser Chris

Roberts said: “We apologise to cus tomers for the inconvenience this closure undoubtedly caused, but I am delighted that we are now in a position to restore service in the vil lage. I trust local residents will sup port this new venture.” (B260405/C)________
