CLITHEROE PC are once again looking for a new first team manager.' It is just seven months since

IfK

Paul Byron took charge at Shawbridge, but due to work commitments he has had to regrettably stand down. . Club chairman John Robin

son was informed of Byron’s decision last Friday, and was grateful to the outgoing boss for being open and honest about his reasons for leaving, thanking him for the work he has put in during his short stay. “He’d had pressure on him to

make a decision by the end of last week about taking a pro motion at work,” said Robin son. “ The extra responsibility

meant that he would be on 24 hour call out, and it would con flict with the time he spends with Clitheroe. “ It’s a shame because I know

he was really looking forward to a fresh start this season, and that he had put his plans in motion. “ I’m just glad he has made a

practical decision now in pre season, rather than waiting a few months to see how things pan out, as it gives us time to find a suitable replacement.” The club had already

manager Ashley Hoskins has also put his name forward again, but, as yet, he is the only one from the names linked the position seven months ago to re-submit an application. But back in December, when

that decision was made, all those applications proved irrel evant, as Byron didn’t actually apply for the post. Unfortunately, this time

advertised in the Non League Newspaper this Sunday, hoping to attract national as well as local interest. But, unlike last tiine, the

chairman and the committee aim to tie the position up as quickly as possible, and have their man in place within two weeks’ time. “ It’s going to be much more

straightforward this time and we aim to have someone in place by July 5th, when the first team return to training. “Martin (Eatough) is stay

ing on with us, and Paul has handed over all his pre-season work and player enquiries for him to follow up.” Names in the hat already are

ex-Ramsbottom boss Derek Egan, who only last Thursday was replaced by former Blues

boss Lee Sculpher. Egaii, who works at the Lan

cashire FA, is spoken of very highly by players and support ers alike, and according to Robinson he gets former Clitheroe boss and chairman David Burgess’ seal of approval.

. — - He left Ramsbottom due to a

lack of finance, having taken them to fifth in the NWCFL First Division last season. • Egan may fit the criteria

Clitheroe are looking for,- as Robinson is interested in some one with coaching badges and preferably level four-UniBond First Division - or above expe rience, as regulations from the Football League are slowly working their way into non league football at the behest of the Football Association.

around Robinson does not have anyone in mind to contact, but he does have a “personal prefer ence” , he said: “ If it was possi ble, and my decision alone, then I would choose Colne’s Nigel Coates. “He has done an excellent

job at the North West Counties club, and I just admire how he has turned things around, got them promoted and had a good run in the FA Vase. “ But he is on a two year con

tract at Colne, and I’m not sure if the rest of the committee would agree wth me. “ It’s a committee decision

and we will select the best man from the applications that we receive. But we’re in a much more positive position than last time.” Anyone interested in'the

position, who has suitable expe rience and qualifications, should contact John Robinson (07971205314).

Lancashire County Council have forced Byron’s hand and made it unrealistic for him to give 100% to the club.

And he said: “ I-w^ cling-

irig on and clinging on and could have started the sea son, but come October, November and December when winter sets in - god knows what hours I will be doing. ■ ' “ It was just not workable.

It wouldn’t have been pro fessional and it is not the

way I like to work. .

. “ I didn’ t want to just limp through as the job deserves 100% time and commitment, anything less wouldn’t be fair on the club or me because as it is, I am pulled all over the county with my job.” Byron is in charge of the

service and maintenance of Lancashire’s road gritters, and his working day is ' stretched up and down the road networks.

’ This caused him problems

last year with away trips to Belper and Spalding, and this winter it would be near impossible to give his full attention to his career, fami

ly and Clitheroe. He has made the decision

now so the club has time to organise for the new season: “The situation needs sorting out now. I’ve been on with the job non-stop since the end of April and I had four decent lads lined up. I ’d even agreed terms. But I - doubt that they will come now as they were all players I had worked with before.” “Whoever takes over can

give me a ring at any time if they want to speak to those players, and I’ll be down at the club from time to time on matchdays as I think it is a great club.”

just a success for Schofield though, as several of the Great Britain team put in personal bests to earn Britain’s great est ever World Cup results. Commenting on

the performance, team manager Jamie Christie said: “ I t ’s been a great couple of weeks for all of us. We have such a young team here and to achieve our best results ever

is fantastic. “Jennie’s bronze '

medal is due reward for the work he has put in.” The next interna
