Story by FAIZA AFZAAL Pictures by ANDREW SMITH J

THEY may be too young to remember it, but children at a rural Ribble Valley school have been celebrating the 60th anniversary of the end of the Sec ond World War. A series of historic events and dis

plays were staged at Bolton-By-Bow- land Primary School to help children recognise the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in last century’s con flict. The clock was well and truly

turned back when youngsters ditched their uniforms and came to school dressed as evacuees to commemorate the anniversary. • Military vehicles, including a 1944 Bedford truck, rolled into the school

and were on show for children to enjoy - thanks to the Blackpool Mil itary Vehicle Trust. There was an interesting and edu

cational display of wartime equip ment including gas masks, machine guns and copies of original newspa pers dating back to May 8th, 1945. Bright sunshine enabled staff and

pupils to enjoy a street party, where they sampled corned beef, cheese and egg sandwiches, potato salad, jelly and custard and buns for dessert. War veterans who had lived

through that difficult time also visit ed the school to share their wartime experiences - both on the home front and overseas. Nostalgic memories of street par ties came flooding back when Royal

Navy veteran Mr Ken Benbow (79) shared his special wartime memories. He commented: “It is very impor

tant to share personal experiences, children learn far more from us than they would from books. “1 remember all the street parties

and celebrations on VE Day.” One of the organisers, Mrs Joanne

Eidsforth, said the event had proved a hit for adults and youngsters alike. Year 6 pupil Ashley Shipston (11),

said he had gained an insight into the wartime celebration and enjoyed get ting behind the wheel of a wartime vehicle and learning about the equip ment used. Staff at the school believe it is very

important for the children to know about the sacrifices made by people

PUPILS at a Ribble Valley school have gained a foothold in slipper design after their cre ations were voted a success by., manufacturers. Asmita Chitnis. of Clitheroe,

Matthew O'Connor, of Hurst Green, and Eleanor Russell-Blackburn, of Blackburn, all Year 6 pupils at St Mary’s Hall, the preparatory school for Stonyhurst College, were delight ed when their design technology work was chosen by Bacup Shoe designers to be made up into “one- off” pairs of slippers.

The Rossendale Valley-based

international company, founded in 1928, is one of the leading suppliers of footwear to UK retailers and holds product licences for many famous children’s and adult charac ters. The pupils, all aged 11, used

favourite themes of heart-shapes, animals and space travel for their slippers, earning high praise for design and wearability from the Bacup Shoe design team. Bacup Shoe’s joint MD, Mr David

Lord, said: “We were pleased to be involved with the children, whose.

standard of work was very high and who had quite obviously put a lot of effort into their project. Our design team was most impressed.” Jonathan Hewat, the college’s

Admissions and Marketing Manag er, said: “Our thanks go to Bacup Shoe for helping us with this project and inspiring the pupils. “I t was a first-time link-up

between the college and Bacup Shoe and we hope our association will con tinue.” ■ Pictured from the left, with their
