The finest Tudor mansion
MIT TO N HALL is the finest Tudor mansion to be seen in the Ribble Valley. Close to the historic village of
Whalley, with its Abbey remains and distinctive shops, Mitton Hall was built at the end of the 15th Century in the reign of Henry VII, the first Tudor monarch. This beautiful ly preserved house has attract ed the attention of historians and artists alike over the years.
IntheBegmning In 1189, three centuries
before the current house was built, the manor of Little Mit ton was granted to Sir Ralphe de Little Mitton and a house constructed on the site. In 1309 it became the property of Alan de Catterall and remained the home of the Catterall family for more than two centuries. Mitton Hall as we now know
seating area
it was built by Ralph de Catter all in 1487. Over the following centuries it passed to several eminent local families: the Sher- bomes of Stonyhurst, the Beau monts and then the Aspinalls of Standen Hall. During the Second AVorld
War the hall was used to house officers of the Third Field Training Regiment and dances were held in the upstairs ball room. In the latter part of the 20th Century the house ceased to be used as a private residence and was instead converted into firstly a club and later a hotel and restaurant.
Inside the House The crowning glory of Mitton Hall is the magnificent oak pan
elled Great Hall, which the cele brated historian of Whalley, Rev. T. D. Whitaker, described as "one of the finest Gothic rooms that I have ever seen in a private house".
Outside the House The Tudor custom of build
ing houses to face South means the Mitton Hall looked on to marshland and has its best views from the back. Behind the house are 15 acres
of gardens, with stone terraces and staircases leading down to the River Ribble, and forming part of what the historian R. D. Ainsworth described as "one of the prettiest landscapes in the Ribble Valley". For many years the grounds were a celebrated feature of the estate, with rose gardens, vegetable gardens and greenhouses, and it was only in the second half of the 20th Cen tury that they were allowed to become overrun.
Mitton Tillage William Howitt described
Mitton village as "one of the most perfect 'Nooks of the World'". As well as the conflu ence of rivers, Mitton boasts a medieval church dating back to 1270, and holds the tombs of the Sherbomes of Stonyhurst. It seems surprising that a vil
lage as small as Mitton was his torically divided between two counties, Lancashire and York shire. Mitton Hall being on the Lancashire side, in Little Mit ton, separated from Great Mit ton by the picturesque Mitton Bridge.

THE GREAT HALL. Along with a painted glass bay window the room features a beauti fully carved screen set out in panels on which are 10 heads, male and female, placed within medallions with the inscription D.H.T.H.T.H. The lettering appears to come from the reign of Edward VI, and Whitaker concludes that these must have been brought over by the Holts of Grislehurst who owned the estate in the 18th Century. A minstrels’ gallery runs eight feet above the floor, and the west wall features an original stone fireplace, contain ing a priest hole that was discovered in 1874.
