on the previous Saturday, could only look on in envy and dream of what might have been! In the April Stableford held at
Mytton Fold in horrendous condi tions, Steve Brooks returned the winner with a very creditable score of 36 points. Division One honours went to
Jim Hindle (34) by a point from Bob Scott 33 points. In Division Two, Keith Gill
scored 34 points to win on a card play-from Dave Clegg and also leads the order of merit. In Division Three S tu a r t
Mayor, who after three years won his first prize by topping his divi sion th e previous week, again topped the poll with 35 points, beating captain-elect Chris Hugh es into second by three points. Bryan Walker had an eventful
day playing in the seniors’ month ly medal at Clitheroe. Pointing out an infringement to
playing partner Dave Warner meant that the latter had to settle
for second place behind the steady Steve Cuniiffe with 37 points. Walker, however, remained cool
to strike a six-iron to the par-three eighth hole and find the hole in one. The obligatory drinks in the
clubhouse proved most popular! Brian Stokes is not prepared to
let his wife, Chris, take all the headlines in her year as captain on Lancashire Ladies. A battling nett 69 in Saturday’s
medal and Castle Cup qualifier saw Stokes take the Division Two prize from Mike Bennie’s nett 74. Stuart Anderson’s nett 68 earned him top spot in Division One from Simon Swindells who won a card play-off with Scott Thompson. Sunday’s three-man team event
was a triumph for the dedicated trio of Archie Moro, Peter Harri son and Steve Dean with 80 points. Jack Simmons, Terry Bithell
and Jim Furnell have enjoyed a good start to the season but had
to settle for second place after a card play-off. Carl Drinkwater, Paul McGuire and Scott Thomp son were disappointed to find themselves one shot off the pace. A. Young (67) won Division
One of the April Medal at Stony- hurst Park while R. Moody (64) took the Division Two honours. Helen Maginn and Chris Stokes
won the Scott Leggatt Foursomes qualifier at Clitheroe with a round of 75-5-5-70-5. That saw them home by a huge
distance from Marilyn Fletcher and Marie Finney (95-16-79) with Barbara Crowther and Maureen Micklewright (107-27-5-79-5) in third place. Junior golf continues to flourish
at Clitheroe. The latest junior medal went to
the talented .Andrew Bennie with a remarkable return of 71-5-66. Richard Tyrell shot a nett 75 of his four handicap to ease junior captain Andrew Heesom out of the prizes after a card play-off.

ANNA GRIFFITHS was crowned Lancashire Schools and County Hep tathlon champion a t the weekend in Preston. Due to injury, she has
not been able to attempt the event for the last two years, and i t is the first she has ever completed.
But she will now head
th e county team a t the regional round of the Eng lish Schools Combined Events Championships at Macclesfield late in June.
In the two-day event in
Preston, Anna ran her first 100m hurdles on Saturday, and produced an excellent time of 16.7secs.
Next was the high jump,
which, along with her long jump, has suffered most, with the b ack problem ensuring her inability to get into the correct posi tion. The shot was 10.35m,
close to a personal best, and the last event of the day was the 200m, which she ran in 27.0secs, also very close to a PB. On Sunday, the long
Anna’s Red Rose title
c
jump was followed by the javelin, an event th a t she has only recently started
■ tackling again after being unable to do any practice or training for over a year.
She threw a PB of
26.79m, to take her into the final event, the gru elling 800m.
Anna wanted a good
time and ran her own race, being rewarded with another PB of 2:33.0.
She won all the events
except the two jumps, and finished with a fine score of 3714 points, enough to finish overall champion.
This coming weekend
she has been selected to represent the North West in an Inter-Regional Under 18 competition a t Cudworth, where she will compete in the 300m Hur dles, 100m Hurdles and Shot.
Ian McCoy at Hicks has
helped Anna with a strength programme, and she is very grateful to the club for all the support and help they have given her.

Lions crown debut season with title
Clitheroe Lio n s ..............6 Intake Reserves...........1 CLITHEROE Lions have emerged as Craven League Second Division champions in their debut season. Despite going 1-0 down
early on in the game, the locals recovered to record their 19th win in 19 games. An unfortunate own goal
from defender Bob Bank gave Intake the opener, but the Lions battered the Intake goal with no less than 10 attempts a t goal, including two disallowed goals, while hitting the post and bar and testing the keeper constantly. Clitheroe were soon level
with in-form striker Holden equalising with a well-taken goal.
, His second was spectacu lar. He picked the ball up on the edge of the area, turned his defender with ease and curled the ball into the bot tom left hand comer. Pinard then scored his
24th goal of the season with another accomplished finish after receiving a superb through ball from manager CengizAvci.
’ ' At this point the Lions
started to relax, even allow ing central defender E Clegg
to roam forward. Winger Conti was also desperate to be part of the action and calmly slotted the ball home early in the second half, as • impressive.
he and Stoddart terrorised the Intake full backs. Gaughan was majestic in
the centre of midfield and was unsurprisingly awarded
,man-of-the-match for his efforts. He played brilliantly all
afternoon alongside Avci, despite some no-nonsense tackling from Intake. The Lions were brimming
with confidence, with Pick up and J. Clegg overlapping the wingers and allowing Pinard to score his second with a thunderous finish, before Conti also grabbed his second, direct from a cor ner. The scoreline was not flat
tering for the Lions as they deserved double, and Hold en was denied his hat-trick
. with the ball seemingly two yards over the line. The Lions next target is
to keep their 100% iviiming streak going until the end of the season, a record never achieved before. Two days earlier, the
Lions set themselves up to clinch the title with a 5-2
win at Grindleton. The town side gave a scin

screaming free kick for the Lions’ third goal, and Ashurst got in on the act after a fine solo run, taking him past five defenders before tucking the ball neat ly into the comer. However, despite these
three strikes, Grindleton keeper Lloyd was in excel lent form and denied the league leaders on several other occasions. But he could not keep out
