P f a Walking all over thie world!
HIGH school pupils preparing to walk around the world are finding that the longest journey begins with a single step. Ribblesdale High School Technology
College has linked up with Ribble Valley Borough Council to organise the “Walk the World” project, promoting physical activi ty and healthy eating. Over the next 12 weeks, pupils taking
part will walk around 100 miles each, together clocking up a mind-boggling total of 24,895 miles - the distance around the world’s equator. ■ The pioneering project came about
through discussions between Kath Mitchell, the borough council’s health walks co-ordinator, Maura Hyland, head of PE at the Clitheroe school, and school nurse Adrienne Wright. Initially it was aimed at pupils who
found it difficult to participate in main stream competitive sport and PE lessons. Support from Clitheroe shop “Onward
and Outward” also provided some excellent prizes for children who won a “design a logo” competition tor the project.
Among the key aims of the project are
highlighting the health and physical bene fits of regular exercise. Walking as a physi cal activity that can be incorporated intc most daily routines, and to encourage members of the public to become involved in out-of-hours activities and become trained volunteer walk leaders. Pupils taking part are asked to complete
a personal diary, which will include person al targets identified at the bepnning of the project. Health and fitness information relating
to exercise and healthy eating will be included in a project pack to be given to all children. It will also include information on, road safety, a pedometer and reflective clothing for road safety. Incentives, spot prizes and certificates
will be available along the way. Our picture shows pupils Eleanor Tat-
tersall and Naomi .Chapelhow Mth Kath Mitchell and Maura Hyland cheered on by pupils at the launch of the “Walk the World” project. (B080405/5)
