Capable grape that sparkles at all prices

VIOGNIER is the white grape of the moment. Rare, enticing- delicate, yet rich and some times oily, this is the perfect alternative if you are tired of Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay. A recent tasting of this grape

from around the world showed what it is capable of a t all prices. Starting a t its home land high up in the Northern Rhone Valley, the town of Con- drieu, produces fragrant and elegantly restrained wines sole ly from the Viognier grape, starting at £18. A hefty price tag, but move to the South of France and the Vin de Pays wines from Viognier are more realistically priced, around £7 gets you a very fruity offering showing the ripe peach and apricot overtones associated with this grape. The Australian versions have

more ripeness of fruit and so can stand a little oak ageing, around six to nine months is perfect for this grape. Adding a creamy richness Mthout taking anything away. For £7 to £8.50 there are several offerings around like Last Ditch, Fontys Pool or Yalumba. We finished on the epitome of

this rare grape, Chateau Grillet 1999, a massive £35 a bottle

of ripe fruit - the apricots are here along with baked apples - the whole structure supported with a hint of vanilla from a lit tle oak ageing. Only 30% of the
