A NEW national hear ing screening service for newborn babies will be fully introduced in the Ribble Valley and across the rest of E a s t Lan cashire this month. The service will lead to

earlier and more reliable detection of hearing prob lems in newborn babies, who will be tested while they are still in hospital by specially trained staff. The programme is being

implemented by the East Lancashire Health Care NHS Trust, with funding from the three local Prima ry Care Trusts. Last October, team

leader Dr Annabel Dodds and local co-ordinator Gillian Mullaney recruited nine screeners to work

across maternity units at Burnley General Hospital and Queen’s Park Hospi tal, Blackburn. The screeners were specially trained and began the pro gramme in January of this year. The scheme became fully operational on k'larch 1st.

Mothers are offered the

screening service in hospi tal and those who are not tested, usually because of early discharge, are given appointments to attend out-patient clinics, at which babies can have the tests at a later date. Babies who do not have

a clear response from one or both ears are given an appointment to attend an audiology clinic where any problems will be investi gated and treated. The service is led by Dr

Annabel Dodds, consult ant audiologist for the

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. She said : “Approximately 900 babies are born every year in the UK with a permanent hearing loss. 'This is not a large number of children over the entire UK, but the potential ramifications of a permanent . congenital hearing impairment can be substantial for both the children and their families. “The aim of the screen

ing programme is to iden tify 90% of children with moderate to profound per manent childhood hearing impairment within eight weeks and 100% by 24 weeks of life.” The screening process

causes no discomfort to the baby. Parents who have any questions or would like further information can contact Gillian Mullaney, Ward C7, at Queen’s Park Hospital on 01254 293265.

ONCE again the A Cappella Singers will be performing in the Ribhle Valley this weekend. Making a return visit, they will

be giving a concert for the Bible Society, at St James’ Church, Clitheroe, on Saturday. The programme from this high

ly-acclaimed group of singers will be very much in keeping with the season of Spring onwards. Several items that will be

included are very well known and . some of the motets they will be

performing are still heard on the radio on the old '’78" records. Also included are some modern

rewritten motets as written by the well known composer, John Rut ter.

This will be the first time that

the singers have been to St James’ and hopefully this new experience will add to their regular venues and may be repeated at a later date.

Members of the public are invit ed to attend even without a ticket

m

and pay at the door. A programme will be included to all those that make a donation to the Bibie Soci ety. Details and tickets can be

obtained in advance from all the churches in the Clitheroe area, or by contacting Glenis Halliday on 01200423245. Tickets are by way of a dona

tion of around £5 to the Bible Society. As this is expected to be a "full house", ticket holders are guaranteed a seat on the night.

Fold, Langho, a raffle was organised and entertainment was provided by musicians Jim Parker and Francis Prince.

Disabled access, a new kitchen and

meeting room will be built at St John’s once the money is raised. Parishioners have organised a host

of events to boost the fund. They will set up stall at Read Gala on June
