This sad story was revealed in a letter written by Mary and discovered in an old family Bible. Mr Turner showed slides to illustrate his talk and was thanked by Mrs B. Spencer. Mrs H. Keighley, vice president, chaired the meeting.


A group of members had enjoyed a recent visit to Barley WI. It was hoped to organise a ■visit on July 5th to Cheshire Oaks and the Lever Art Gallery.


Parish meeting The electors of the Parish of Read are invited to attend the annual parish meet­ ing on Tuesday, April 26 at 7 p.m. in the school on Straits Lane. The business of the meeting will be to read the minutes of the last annual meet­ ing held in April 2004 and to report on any matters arising. The lines were not repainted after some recent roadworks, but the county coun­ cil said they will be repainted as soon as possible. A site meeting was to be held to look at a’ planning application for a garage, utility room, gymnasium, consulting room and toilet at 14 Pendle Street West. Before the site meeting councillors looked at the plans and felt it was too big in rela­ tion to its position and they feared it was for business use despite being classi­ fied as non-commer­ cial. At the meeting two nearby residents said they were very concerned about the size of the proposed extension which took up the length of six gardens, including '.their own. Members would make their observations to the borough council after the site meeting.


The new season start­ ed at Sabden Bowl­ ing Club with the usual coffee and cakes morning in the pavilion on April 2nd which raised around £300 for the club. League games began last week with the eight teams looking to consolidate their positions in the vari­ ous divisions. New members are wel­ come and should con­ tact any member of the committee. Members’ subscrip­ tions are now due. It is £20 for full mem­ bers, £18 seniors, £8 juniors and £5 for social members.
