to the VTR’s ability to aver age 45 m.p.g. in everyday driving conditions. Citroen has been spectac

about the C2 VTR value t proposition. Weighing in at £11,195, if 0}}

you take underlying infla tion into account, the VTR works out at less than its sparsely equipped Saxo pre- S' decessor retailed at seven years ago. It is now accompanied by

a 125 b.h.p. VTS model priced at £800 more, but the VTR is still likely to be the big seller. The C2 VTR has a serious

weight of expectation rest ing upon its little shoulders. So far it seems to bearing up extremely well.

did their best to play some open rugby, but with the form of the ball alternat ing between a bar of soap and a mud-encrusted bag of spuds a spectacle of exhibition rugby it was not. Clitheroe started the

match brightly enough, and after weathering some early pressure, managed

storming back and grabbed a converted try. For the next 20 minutes

lost a little momentum, loose forward Ralph Rigby limping off with a thigh strain, replaced by the much younger Joe Newton. A Choriey attack,

Clitheroe were scrumming well and gaining prof itably at line-out time, but fatally failed to use the elements to their best advantage. It was crying out for the

seemingly well-rebutted, ended up with a scrum near the Clitheroe line. And having been so

comfortable in the scrums until then, it was tragic then to turn the ball over. This led directly to

leather to be booted off the ball - with the wind at their backs, this would have been the easiest way to gain territory. Flawed, but well-meant

Chorley’s second try, which they followed up with a penalty. Clitheroe never gave up

intentions, saw the ball kept in hand, and yardage gained was minimal at best. The game was probably

lost in this period, as fail ing to accrue enough points to face the wind in the second half was disas trous. The second half was

hope though, and battled back to the home goal line where they seemed to spend an age battering away, only for Chorley to hoof the ball down the other end of the field whenever it went free. It was from one of these

marginally more of a proper game, as with the wind drying out the pitch slightly, but only paradox ically, to make the going that much heavier and

that the final Chorley try came, to drive a dagger through the Littlemoor men’s hearts. To their eternal credit

they never gave up hope, and an excellent try for skipper Dave Watson on the final whistle was scant reward for their efforts.

Lions aim to maintain championship form

CLITHEROE Lions manager Cengiz Avci feels if his side maintain their efforts over the remainder of the season, they will win promotion. The Lions have 11 wins

from 11 and top the Craven League Second Division in their first season at this level, and Avci said: “Ive been very encouraged by the start my team has made, and believe if they show the same dedication and

determination

throughout the season, we should win promotion into

the First Division. “I think the hard train

ing sessions have paid div idends, as two sessions a week have seen the Lions in top condition for each match, and have especial ly helped when we have been in tight games and needed to dominate late on.” He added: “Our foot

balling ability has never been in doubt, but our most

impressive

attributes have been great team morale and great

work ethic - long may this continue. “I am hoping our

match will go ahead on Saturday and the weather does not enforce another week without playing, as four weeks without a game is a long time.” The Lions saw another

game beaten by the weather on Saturday as their away match against McBride’s was postponed due to torrential rain. William Coates was close to returning after his

lengthy injury problems, and he hopes to make at.^ least one appearance for the Lions before the end of the season if his groin, calf and hamstring prob lems finally clear. The next game will be

on Saturday at Roefield playing fields against Cononley

Sports

Reserves, kick-off 2 p.m. All players are asked to

meet at Roefield for 1-30 p.m.

Dog Inn hoping to beat weather for vital match

FOLLOWING the postponement of all last week’s Terry Cattermole Trophy ties, Dog Inn are hoping that the weather will allow them to return to league action this Sunday. The Budweiser Boys are due to play bottom side Helmshore Harri

ers at Wilson’s, and manager Simon Kerins is eager for the match to take place: “We were all looking for ward to the cup game and were very frustrated at the postponement. “The Helmshore game is a must- win match for us, and having beat

en them 5-1 away two months ago, we are very hopeful of taking all three points.” He added: “Our current league

position doesn't reflect the quality of the side, but only we can lift our selves up the table.”
