Vicar slams acts of ‘deranged minds’

by Julie Magee

A VICAR has described the action of vandals who attacked a parish hall over the weekend, as "cowardly

and mindless". The Rev. Rodney Nicholson, vicar of

St Paul’s Church, Low Moor, added that the vandalism, which occurred when intruders broke into the parish hall overnight on Saturday, was the work of "deranged minds". After gaining access to the hall by

smashing through a rear door, the van dals flung crockery around the commu nity building, daubed the floor and stage curtains with paint, deliberately damaged playgroup and other chil dren's equipment, ripped cupboard doors off their hinges, shattered a kitchen window and left a variety of obscene graffiti on the walls. Mr and Mrs Mark and Hilary

Hutchinson, of Meadow View, who administer the premises, were the first to discover the damage when they vis ited the hall on Sunday morning to

investigate storm damage from Friday

evening. In a double whammy of misfortune

for the hall, a tree, situated on Roefield behind a wall adjacent to the hall, fell victim to the weekend's high gusts. I t crashed through the wall and then almost demolished much of the parish hall during its descent. Work will now have to be carried out to repair damage

to hall roof tiles. Mr Nicholson explained how the hall

is used for a wide range of regular activities, mostly involving children and young people. He estimated that the "pointless" damage would cost in the region of £1,000 to put right. Mr Nicholson went on to pay tribute

to a team of church and playgroup members who turned out a t short notice and gave part of their Sunday to a clean-up operation, ensuring that it could be business as usual at the hall

the following day. Clitheroe police are investigating the

incident, which is the latest in a series of attacks on church property in recent

weeks. On Thursday, December 30th, a

large stone was hurled through one of the hall's windows. Some of the dia mond-shaped church windows have

also been broken. Not content with the damage

already caused to the hall, this Mon- conlinued on page 2

»As I see it - page 6 Is Jason the weakest link?

VIEWERS of the popular BBC quiz show “The Weakest Link” will see a familiar figure come face-to-face with the infamous Anne Robinson in tomorrow’s episode. Whalley’s Police Community Sup

port Officer (PCSO) Jason Taylor will be seen answering general knowl edge questions fired by Anne and will battle it out with eight other contes tants to win a possible jackpot of

£ 10,000. Although the 24-year-old says he

did “fairly well” and hit it off with Anne straight away, he is remaining tight-lipped about how well he did until after the episode has been aired. However, he is promising viewers

who watch the whole episode that they will not be disappointed.

-“I t was just great fun being on the

show,” said Jason, who has been a community officer in the Ribble Val ley since November 2002. “I hit it off with Anne straight

away and the first question that she asked was why I wasn’t a ‘proper’

police officer?! “My biggest fear was not to get on

the wrong side of her and viewers will see tomorrow how eventful the pro

gramme became.” So, will Jason be the first to per

form the silent walk of shame? In which round will Anne have to state: “You are the Weakest Link, good bye?” Or will he simply turn out to be a general knowledge genius and win the game. Tune into BBC2 tomor row at 5-15 p.m. to find out.
