bursting out of those new Christinas clothes, and dearly in

need of a physical workout. But as well as slogging your way

through a step class, or pounding your legs on an exercise bike, have a go at something altogether more fun. From sensual belly dancing to sexy

salsa, try some fun exercise which may even help you master a few moves for the dance floor - healthy eating, i.e. five daily portions of fruit and vegeta bles, is also essential for weight loss. With so many fun fitness opportuni

ties around there’s no excuse for not working off the festive flab.

AN environmental project, launched last year to help with the crippling after effects of foot and mouth disease, has won a presti gious award. Staff and volunteers at the

Gisburn-based Jigsaw Environ mental community project, which has been developed as part of Trinity Community Partnership’s Jigsaw group, were all smiles when they scooped the Lancashire Busi ness Association Award. The prize was awarded by

Groundwork’s Business Envi ronment Association, an organ isation which recognises hard work by environmentally-con- scious businesses from across Lancashire, at a glitzy ceremo ny held at the Dunkenhaigh Hotel. The initiative was also high

ly commended in other cate gories, including the Water Wise and Business in the Com munity sections. Project manager Ellen Pope

was thrilled to bits with the award. She is always looking forward to inspire volunteers to join the team and make a dif ference to the environment around them. She commented: “It is a

great recognition for all the hard work and effort that has been put into the first year of Jigsaw Environmental, from the staff, our volunteers and students. “We are looking forward to

many more years of growing fruit, vegetables and salads, as well as training our students in horticulture.” The project aims to support

the long-term development of people with disabilities and those disadvantaged through economic or social exclusion. The focus of the scheme’s

activities centre on organic horticulture and the produc tion of organic food crops. It supports the economic

development of Gisburn and offers a platform for the provi sion of training and employa bility skills. Currently there are 18 full

and part-time students and volunteers who have all put in a lot of hard work and time to enable the first season’s fruit and vegetable crops to be a suc

cess. The produce continues to be

sold in Gisburn shops and at Clitheroe Farmers Market, held on the last Wednesday of the month at Clitheroe Auction

Mart. The project area coverage

includes all the existing rural priority area wards in the Rib ble Valley, as identified by EU Objective 2 status and the Rural Development Pro

gramme. Future plans include an eco-

friendly building, wildlife area and environmental education

for all ages. For more information on Jig saw Environmental, please

m ' ' • youth centre by Faiza Afzaal THE wait is nearly over for fed-up

Whalley youngsters. Teenagers, parents, police officials,

together with the village’s traders, attend ed a public meeting at the Rendezvous nightclub, which enabled youngsters to air their views on what activities should be held at the new drop-in centre. During the meeting it was announced

that local businessman Mr Peter Street had offered part of his premises to be used by the youngsters as a youth cafe. Until now, young people only had Whal

ley Youth Club, in The Sidings, during Thursday nights to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. Taking care of the whole project is the

village’s police officer, PC (Jeoff Pennal, who said the meeting was a success and it was now only a matter of time before the youth cafe will open its doors to the young

sters. Speaking after the meeting, he said: It

was great to see more than 50 people — both young and old alike — attend the meeting

and share their views. “Funding and the need for volunteers

were high on the agenda. However, as peo ple are beginning to feel really enthusiastic about the whole project, I am sure more and more volunteers will come forward to

help. “The aim of the drop-in centre is to

reduce the very little anti-social and self destructive behaviour we have in the area and offer a safe place for youngsters to sim

ply chill out.” Under the plans, part of a building on

the corner of Accrington Road and King Street, which currently houses antiques shop “As Time Goes By” and Ribble Val ley taxis, will be open to 11 to 16-year-olds from Whalley and the surrounding villages. PC Pennal added: “We are still urging a

lot of volunteers to come forward and are still in need of funding to get the cafe up and running.” Also at the meeting was Ribble Valley

Borough Council’s crime and disorder reduction partnership co-ordinator, Mr Bill Alker, who was very pleased to see traders and youngsters working together on an ini tiative of this kind. He said: “I think it’s an excellent project

and everyone should support it. “Having said that, there are clearly some

hurdles yet to overcome i.e. planning per mission, health and safety, police checks etc, however I am sure, with the communi ty effort being put in this project, these problems will be easily overcome. “As far as the borough council is con

cerned in helping with funding, if there are any funds that can be accessed, which are not needed to be allocated elsewhere, we will certainly look at the youth cafe.” The need for a drop-in centre was high

lighted by members of Whalley Chamber of Trade at a meeting in October, who felt this was a solution to the occasional anti social behaviour in the village and some thing to beat boredom. Key member and borough councillor

Coun. Joyce Holgate, said: “It is a very positive project and I am very glad to see people of all ages rallying behind to make

it a success.” Similar views have been shared by all

members of Whalley Chamber of Trade and especially Mr John Atherton, who is working very hard to get this project up and running before the end of March. Mr Street is pictured with Mr Atherton along with residents and youngsters at the

meeting. (S050105/4) • More details about the youth cafe will

appear in the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, but for further information regard ing the plans, please contact PC Pennal on

Cliffieroe Advertiser & Times, January 13th, 2005 S' A day to remember

A BIRTHDAY celebration turned into a family reunion when a Rib ble Valley shop owner received a surprise present for her 50th. Mrs Susan Moran, the post

, < / m y- « 7-’,

mistress of Billington Village Store and Post Office, received the best present she could have wished for when her daughter from Aus tralia arrived unexpectedly at her birthday lunch. Miss Michelle Moran (30), who

emigrated to Sydney three years ago, organised the secret trip with one of her sisters, Mrs Amy Veri

ty. Michelle, a former St Augus

tine’s pupil, had not been home since August 2003. Another sister. Miss Claire

Moran (31), who works alongside her mother in the Billington store, said it was an unbelieveble moment she will never forget. She added: “It was a wonderful

surprise, not just for mum, but the whole family.” The mother of five, who is well

known within Billington, enjoyed a birthday meal at the weekend with the whole family to cele brate the occasion.

Vandals strike

VANDALS broke into the Avenue restaurant and hotel at Brockhall Vil lage, Langho, at the weekend. They entered the building after a

power cut disabled the computerised key system. As a result, the rear door was left open for residents in case of a fire emergency. A police spokesman said that after

the vandals had carried out an "untidy" search of the laundry, they took five bed sheets and several toilet rolls, which they then hurled around the hotel and outside the building. Anyone with information should call Clitheroe police on 01200 443344.
