or most people, I would argue that getting fit is more of a chore than a

pleasure. There are those enthusiasts

who do genuinely enjoy putting themselves through the paces and reaping the benefits (like my friend, Claire), but for the average person 1 would argue that if they could get away with out exercising they would. Therefore it still baffles me as

to why I foolishly decided to set myself a challenge and applied to enter this year’s Great North Run. As someone who occa sionally exercises (and I don’t mean walking to the pub) the thought of running 13 miles around the North-East had not really sunk into my tiny mind.

Stamine Steered on by the encourage

ment of friend Claire, who is also competing, I set myself a goal of running two to three miles a week in order to build up my stamina. As I already attended a circuit

class once a week, I kidded myself that my level of fitness was okay. However, after a few running sessions this was soon proved wrong. 1 could just about manage

three miles, without needing the help of emergency servic es, but each time i ran it did not seem to get any easier. Coupled with the bad weather, my moti vation to brave the streets alone soon went downhill and I even tually stopped going out. One evening while sat in the

7* .2 ' ‘.‘A.'

comfort and warmth of my lounge watching ’’Corrie',’ reality set in and I started to panic about the lack of training that I was doing. Decisive action was needed, so 1 joined a local run ning club. Set up by Joanne Ruddock,

of Sawley, and Julie Martin, of Clitheroe, the club is aimed at women of all ages and abilities. Meeting every Tuesday evening, the women have a choice of running two, three or

five miles. As someone who had never

been to a running club before, I thought the idea was brilliant. The sessions really work as an incentive, as you feel guilty if you do not attend. Each woman is there to achieve her own per sonal goal, and as a group we are entering the Blackpool 10km run in May.

So with two races in the

pipeline 1 knew I needed to start running more and I decided to train alongside Claire. However, I quickly found out that, as a fit ness guru with a very (unhealthy) competitive streak, her training pattern would put Paula Ratcliffe’s to shame 1 After a few sessions in which

I tried to run on her heels, in the belief her gravitational pull would help me along, I realised that a softer approach was needed. Therefore I started run ning with my old faithful - my dad! At present we run three to four miles a week and I realise this will soon have to increase if I am ever going to manage the 13-mile race. As long as I keep pounding

the streets from now until Sep tember, I feel confident that I will cross the finishing line. Granted I may not be fast, but unlike my friend Claire I will not be trying to keep up with Paula! ■Tracy and Claire will be run

ning in aid of Children’s Wish, MS Society and RNIB. Anyone

who would like to sponsor eithershould call 01200422324,

or come into the Clitheroe Advertiser andTimes office.
