Tragic journey leads to ban
A CHATBURN man was breathalysed as he drove home from an annual pilgrimage to put flowers on the grave of his nephew who died of cancer aged just 18. ' Blackburn magistrates heard th a t
Stephen Patrick Jones (50) had been to the grave in Preston with his brother, the boy’s father, and after they had gone for a drink. Defence solicitor Mr Richard Prew said
his client could not explain why he had continued drinking knowing he had to drive home to Chatburn. Jones, of Pendle Avenue, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen of breath.
He was disqualified from driving for 12
months and fined £150 with £75 costs. Mr Prew said Jones had provided the
first specimen, bu t had become nervous thinking about the consequences of what he had done and had been unable to pro vide the second sample. He said Jones worked shifts as a fitter at
BAE Systems, Warton,.and would have great difficulty continuing his employ ment.'
.
. • His client’s partner, who was disabled , and could only drive for short periods of time, was also heavily dependent on him.

Driver (44) was four
times over legal limit
A WOMAN dri-ving through Chatburn was found to be more than four times the legal drink-drive limit. Blackburn magistrates heard th a t a
police officer on duty in Chatburn saw Christine Ostle (44), driving towards him late at night without lights on. As she passed he noticed that a front tyre
was completely flat, but when Ostle was stopped she was not aware she was driving on the rim. Ostle, of Fairbairn Avenue, Burnley,
pleaded guilty to driving with excess alco hol. She was remanded on bail until May 25th for the preparation of pre-sentence reports after the court heard she gave a reading of 149 against the legal limit of 35. Mr Neil Standage (prosecuting) said an
officer on mobile patrol in Clitheroe Road, Chatburn, a t 10-36 p.m. saw a car coming towards him \vith no lights on. .“He flashed a t the driver a couple of
times and the lights came on, but as the car passed he saw that the front off-side tyre was completely deflated,” said Mr Standage. Mr Phil Turner (defending) said his
client, who had no previous convictions, was deeply ashamed of her behaviour. He said Ostle had been battling alcoholism for the past 10 years. She resists rather than succumbs to her addiction and is generally drink-free,” said
Mr Turner. “On this occasion she discovered her son
had some domestic difficulties and her father’s health had taken a turn for the worse. She drove to a secluded spot and consumed an amount of alcohol over the course of the day.”
