MEMBERS of Lancashire County Council could receive pensions according to futoe years of serv ice after voting to accept recom mendations from an independent
Remuneration Panel. Many members currently lose out on
pension entitlement due to losing earn ings while on public duty. If forecasts is that the pensions will cost up to an expect ed total of £52,000 for the cunent year. Pension arrangements will be identical

rently active members of the pension scheme. The changes will add a maximum
of84 people. Justification for change is that the role
of members has changed over many years and many have lost pay and pension enti tlement. From now, pensions will start clocking up from when a member regis ters, not fixrm when first elected.

for increased devolution of decision-making to district level and to parish and town councils. The

June 2005 will be remembered for a long time by pupils across Lancashire.
Hundreds took part in Lancashire Maths Week - the first time this important subject has been the focus of a series of events both in schools and at selected venues in the county.
With the emphasis on ,fun children of all ages and abilities were able to take part in Number Fun, Murderous Maths, Playing for Success and Maths at Work among many other maths based events.
All Lancashire's schools, primary, secondary and special, had the opportunity to take part and many complemented the work of the Lancashire Maths Team by organising their own school based sessions.
With exciting and entertaining presenters such^ as Dave Godfrey and Kjartan Posskitt, there was never a dull moment as young people got to learn through song, activity and magici
One of the highlights of the week was the final of the 2005 Lancashire Mathematics Challenge, a competition involving all Lancashire's secondary schools that started way back at the beginning of the year with initial rounds in schools. Each
school put forward a team of four year seven pupils to con test district finals with nine teams competing for the title at the final in Chorley.
The winning team was Bishop Rawstorne CE Language College from Croston with second and third places going to Clitheroe Royal Grammar School and Glenburn Sports College, Skelmersdale.
The Maths Week and Maths Challenge are sponsored by Lancashire County Developments Ltd, the County Council's economic development company. Managing Director Steve Dean said:
“Maths is essential to all of us throughout our lives, and learn ing to enjoy numbers and be comfortable with them is the key.
“At LCDL we are working to create jobs and employment, making sure our young people are encouraged to reach their potential is just one way that we can make a difference. Maths Week was enjoyed by hundreds of young people in the county and I am sure they will have a very different view of maths thanks to the hard work of the Lancashire Maths Team.”

cially recognised the work carried out by carers. Lancashire also has an
estimated 1,200 young car ers who help look after other people. Support services offered
include respite care, resi dential short breaks, day care, home care and com munity support based on assessment of need. Carers’ grants are award
ed to fund carers’ services - £3.8m is being spent this year, compared to £2.6m last year.
