Clitheroe aces book place in semi-finals


CLITHEROE Tennis Club this week saw their mixed doubles A side book their place in the semi­ finals of the East Lan­ cashire Cup after they beat Crow Wood A. Team regulars Mary


Brass and Steve Pym were joined by Louise Burrill and Phil Mileham for the match a t Crow Wood, easily winning their matches in straight sets.


And in the Second Divi­


sion of the Open League, the same side recorded a fine win'over local rivals WhalleyC. Phil Mileham and


Daniel Bush won both their games in straight sets, although they had a tremendous tussle with the Whalley number one pair. Steve Pym and Tony


Bush also won both their games, dropping a set against the Whalley num­ ber ones but eventually winning through in the third. . This Saturday the team


take on Whalley B in what is sure to be a close encounter, with Whalley


looking to avenge the early season defeat at Chatburn Road. Also in the Second Dm-


sion, the Clitheroe B mixed doubles team had an easy win on Sunday against a stylish outfit from Crosshills. Peter Bell, teaming up


with Christine Smitton, summoned up all their years of experience to win both their matches in straight sets. The more youthful pair­


ing of Gordon Whittaker and Jennifer Holgate also made light of both their matches to secure a straightforward win. Gordon, wearing his


now famous cap, moved effortlessly around the court all morning, and ap a r t from one or two


-hair-raising moments, provided more than ade­ quate support for his young partner Jennifer, who is one of the great success stories of Clitheroe’s youth policy. Jennifer is now estab­


lishing herself in the sen­ ior side having played in the junior teams for many years..

Emma’s stunning junior title double


ONE of Clitheroe Tennis Club’s most promising juniors, Emma Calvert, was recently crowned double East Lancashire champion. The 12-year-old produced a remarkable performance to not only win the


Under 13s competition, registering a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the final, she also stepped up to the Under 16s event and again proved unbeatable, winning 6- 3,6-0 in the final. The win added to fellow Clitheroe player Mary. Brass’ Ladies’ Individ­


ual title, which she retained by beating Whalley’s Kathy Green at Burnley Tennis Club, 0-6,6-4,6-4.


Refurbishment at Station Road continues to progress


REFURBISHMENT work at Whalley Cricket, Tennis and Bowling Club continues to progress well. Both external infrastructure


and internal improvements to the pa-vilion have recently been completed. A new boundary fence along


the bottom of the railway embankment has also been fin­ ished, which has created a good visual improvement. 'ANew flagging and steps in'


front of the pavilion have made a tremendous difference for spectators, who can now sit on new memorial benches.


These can be individually


dedicated for a mutually- agreed reasonable donation of which details are available from the club itself. Further external works are


planned which will eventually bring upgraded utility services to the cricket and bowls pavil­ ion. This will result in better interior facilities all rou'nd, a floodlight bowling green as well as a proper tarmac road­ way and car park all the way from the Mitton Road entrance. Inside the pavilion'new flooring, a refurbished ladies


loo and a general brighter decor has given the old build­ ing a much-needed boost. The club . officials are


delighted with recent assis­ tance from local businesses and volunteers. At long last, many people


are pulling in the same direc­ tion with the ultimate goal of seeing modern sports facilities for young and old alike. A number of further fund­


raising events are planned which will be publicised as appropriate when arranged. These are vital to progress as lottery funding is not present­


ly available for the club - source of frustration for many sports organisations through­ out Ribble Valley - but at least the private endeavour does cre­ ate a good atmosphere and team spirit which should see members’ ambitions realised in due course. The club welcomes new


members, particularly people who may have recently moved in or around Whalley, with social membership starting from just £10. Anyone interested can call


at the club on any evening for further information.
