AGUAR’S S-TYPE was never conceived as a par ticularly sporty car but it

Director Ian Galium was recently tasked to, visually at least, make it just that and he’s succeeded better than anyone could have expected. Rather than just including

Callum’s bodywork tweaks on the most expensive variants. Jaguar have decided to make his efforts available to all buy ers, courtesy of the ‘Sports Col lection’ pack we feature here. In fact, you don’t even need to be a new S-TYPE buyer since the body styling package can be retro-fitted to existing cars. Costing £2,000 (excluding

the 18-inch Proteus alloy wheels you really need to finish the whole thing off), the kit is supposed to give the car ‘a more modern, aggressive and sportier appearance’ according to Jaguar. They say that the package was designed ‘to reflect and accentuate the dynamic-qualities and sleek, strong profile that the S-TYPE offers, using the car’s existing flowing lines to project its ath leticism and performance.’ This, apparently, will ‘ulti mately make a dramatic but subtle impression on both pas sengers and passers-by’. No marketing hyperbole in evi dence there then. Set all that guff aside and the reality is that the -

Collection’ pack does enhance the car’s showroom appeal. The key word here is ‘subtle’. Nobody spending around £30,000 on an Executive saloon competitive with cars like the BMW 5 Series or Mer cedes E-class is going to want a tackled-on bodykit that looks like its been sourced from a Halfords catalogue. And this doesn’t look remotely like that. Black front upper and lower,

grilles and a rear lower black mesh grille do emphasise what sportiness there is in the stan dard S-TYPE’s appearance. Lowered side sill appliques and new front and rear lower valances ensure the more squat, purposeful stance is noticeable from all angles. Buyers also get a new front' valance with chrome bezels around the fog lights,' a more pronounced rear bootlid spoil er and new exhaust tailpipe fin ishers, giving the car what Jaguar call ‘an aura of self con fidence’. Sorry, I ’ll try not to read any more from the brochure.... S-TYPE prices s ta r t at £25,995 for the 2.5-litre 'V6, so in theory, it should be possible

- to put a brand new Sports Col lection model on the road for under £28,000. In practice, that might be difficult, for the 2.5 V6 is not long for this world, most currentday S- TYPE customers preferring the 2.7-litre diesel, priced from £28,895. In any case, most cus tomers interested in the Sports

Collection kit will also be inter- ^ ested in the existing Sport ^ derivatives of standard models. ' These start at £29,995 for th{ C aforementioned 2.5 'V6, whilst the 3.0-litre Sport version costs ( £31,995 and there’s even a 4.2- litre 'V8 Sport at £38,595 - not to mention the 2.7-litre 'VC ^ diesel at £32,895. The Sport treatment is a fail

bit more subtle than that ol the Sports Collection kit but ir. both cases, that term ‘subtle’ remains (fortunately) the watchword. Gone are the acres of chrome that normally sur round the grille, replaced instead by body-colour paint. As well as the grille surround, the bumper blades and numbei plate plinth have been de- chromed. If you’re buying e Sport-trimmed S-TYPE, you don’t have to worry about pay ing extra for the Sports Collec tion’s Proteus alloy wheels since the Sport package includes a choice of some seri ously purposeful 18-inch ‘Monaco’ or ‘Indianapolis’ (your choice) two-piece alloj wheels manufactured by BBS. Finished in silver, the seven- spoke wheels use titanium fix ing screws and are fitted with < monster Pirelli P-Zero low pro file tyres. Other Sport features include .

sports suspension \vith uprated springs and dampers, plus larg- < er ventilated front brake discs ^ Inside, you’ll find leathei sports seats with eight-way power adjustment for the driv er, a leather sports steering wheel and aluminium I'acis trim. Dynamic Stability Con trol is fitted to all versions, and the 4.2-litre car also gets Jaguar’s acclaimed Computei Active Technology Suspensior (the cheesily acronymed CATS) as a standard fitment. Given that the 4.2-litre mode! makes sixty in 6.2 seconds or the way to 146mph, you may well find yourself needing it. More clever technology

across all S-TYPE models comes in the form of what Jaguar calls its Adaptive Restraint Technology Systerr. (ARTS for short). The idea' here has been to create a sys tem that avoids the increasing number of airbag-related.

■ injuries by sensing the particu lar position of each front seat; occupant and the particulai characteristics of any giver, impact. The ARTS systerr uses four ultrasonic detectors to determine the position oi the front seat passenger and ar. electronic sensor in the seat track to determine the positior.: of the driver.

' _ Get too close to the fasciE

and the airbags simply won t deploy. The passenger seat alsc has a weight sensor that not only disables the airbag ii there’s no one sitting m it but

■ also determines whether and tc what extent the airbag should be deployed-on smaller oi lighter occupants (children foi example) who often suffer most ftom airbag-related accidents.

Anna delivers the perfect response

ANNA Griffiths gave the perfect response to the selec tors who overlooked her for the English Schools’ 400m hurdles by producing her finest achievement to date. Competing at the AAA Championships in Bedford at

the weekend, the Clitheroe athlete turned in a terrific performance to reach the final in a time of 64.09 seconds, but bettered that in the final, despite being placed in lane one. Sticking rigidly to her post-race plan, at hurdle five

Anna was adrift of the field, but ran a superb bend and cruised towards the line to take a hugely commendable sixth in 63.72 seconds - .16 seconds outside her personal best. In a field of runners from all the home nations, no-one

competing in this weekend’s English Schools’ Champi onships finished ahead of Anna - one in the eye for the selectors, but little consolation to the youngster, who would have been a serious contender for the gold on this form. Anna also competed in the shot putt at Bedford, the

event she will compete in at the English Schools’ in Birmingham. She finished 11th - no mean feat up against the best

of the UK, many of which were two years older. Anna has also been invited to the very prestigious

EAP hurdles meeting at Loughborough on July 16th, where she will be up against the top Seniors and Under 20s.
