MOTOR MATTERS WHILE a decrease in car theft is good
news for motorists, car recovery firms are warning that patterns of car crime are
changing for the worse, exposing Britain's car owners to more sinister acts of violence. The increasing use of security devices are
indeed reducing the car thief's chances of suc cess. However, those who do manage a crimi nal get-away are leaving much more behind at the scene of the crime than a costly repair bill, according to a leading motor assistance provider. Of the hundreds of recoveries of stolen
vehicles that they made last year, an increas ing number of the abandoned cars had been rigged, to deliberately cause grievous harm to the person who discovered it, be it the owner, recovery operator, or the police. Razor blades hidden inside car door handles are an increas ingly common calling card from offenders, as are used hypodermic needles buried in the seats. The recovery operators are highly trained
to safely deal with any problems at the scene of a recovery. As well as wearing protective clothing, many of them now place a wooden board onto the driving seat before getting into an abandoned car. The recovery compa nies are therefore urging the innocent victims of car criihe to always leave the recovery of their abandoned vehicles in the protected hands of the experts. I IT is not often that an attempted bank rob bery causes chaos on the roads but in Mon
treal recently traffic ground to a halt due to an attempted heist. The enterprising thieves had dug a tunnel under a road outside a bank with the intention of gaining access to the vaults. Unfortunately for them the tunnel collapsed causing the traffic mayhem. I TURKEY has an appalling road safety record and is desperate to find a way to
reduce the number of accidents on its roads. Officials' latest attempt to reduce the chaos is to open a museum of wrecked cars in Istan bul in the hope that people will be shocked into better driving habits.

limited but that does not stop it continuing to be a desirable car, especially in the flagship CT guise we look at here. The last Toyota model in
T
Europe to be launched with a GT badge was the mighty GT-One Le Mans racer, a no-compromise, thorough bred machine that powered to a new lap record in the 24- hour contest in 1998. The Celica GT is cut from very different cloth of course but it still has an air of serious sportiness about it, hugging the road closer, thanks to lowered suspension and a complete body kit ivith side skirts, front air dam and a muscular rear spoiler mounted on the tailgate. The visual impact is rein
forced by a set of dedicated 17 in. alloy wheels with GT wheelcaps, while in the cabin, sports and luxury themes combine in Alcan tara suede-effect upholstery and a special knob for the gearshift, both unique to the GT model. The car also ben efits from a sound system
