airlifted to hospital

A MOTORCYCLIST who collided with a metal fence at Dunsop Bridge on Sun day was airlifted to hospi tal with possible spinal injuries. Mr John Peter Radcliffe

(40), is said to be in a sta ble condition at the Royal Preston Hospital. The North West Air Ambu lance (NWAA) responded to the incident involving Mr Radcliffe at 2-24 p.m. on Sunday. His motorbike had collided with a metal fence on Trough Road. B ow la n d -P e n n in e

Mountain Rescue Team were already at the scene along with a Lancashire Land Ambulance, but the NWAA was called due to crucial factors making it the best form of transport for the patient. Lynda Brislin, charity

chief executive of the NWAA explained: “Arriv ing at the scene, NWAA paramedics carried out full spinal immobilisation in order to restrict movement and prevent more discom fort for the casualty. We were called due to several factors making us one of the most versatile emer gency services.” “The incident occurred

in an extremely isolated area, which would have made it very difficult for a land ambulance to get to the scene quickly and also transport the patient rap idly to hospital. We were able to transport the patient smoothly to Royal Preston Hospital in a time of just eight minutes, which was crucial consid ering his possible spinal injuries.” For situations such as

this, the NWAA has recently launched an ini tiative to safeguard bikers on the region’s roads, by producing and distributing “biker cards” to ensure bikers have the relevant details required for identi fication in the event of an accident. The biker cards come in

a standard credit card size, with spaces for the card holder to include their name, a contact number, any illnesses or allergies they have and any medica tion they may be taking. North West Air Ambu

lance Biker Cards are free and can be requested by calling the NWAA on 0151 527 2511.Pictured is the North West Air Ambu lance at the scene, (s)

‘Despicable’ thief steals from elderly woman (84)

CONCERNED relatives of an 84-year-old Clitheroe woman are appealing for the safe return of her pen sion book, cards and £140 cash, which they believe were stolen in the vicinity of Clitheroe Post Office. The pensioner, who wish

es to remain anonymous, is extremely upset after the incident, which took place on the afternoon of last Thursday. According to rel atives, the elderly woman withdrew her pension from King Street, and as she turned away to put her money in her purse, an opportunist thief stole her pension book, payment cards and £140. Since the incident, her

son has hit out at the offenders responsible and is appealing for any informa tion relating to the “despi cable” theft. He said: “What gives

anyone the right to steal from a frail pensioner? I just cannot understand how someone can target an old, vulnerable person. “I would just like the

people responsible to hand the money into the police. The cards have been can celled.” Anyone with informa

tion regarding the missing goods should contact police on 01200 443344, or the free-and-confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.

It’s perfect | Last Days at School weather for all the fun of the fete

By Julie Magee

THE sun shone on Sunday after noon, providing the perfect weather for Hurst Green’s Annu

al Summer Fete. A large crowd watched the proces

sion from The Green to the Bailey Field, where the fete was officially opened by Father Denis Blackledge, the new chaplain and Superior at nearby Stonyhurst College. On the platform with Father

Blackledge was the fete queen. Shan non Gately, and her two attendants, Genevieve Turner and Jenny Dewhurst. A ivide variety of attractions were

on offer including children’s races, teas, and various stalls. A highlight for the spectators and participants was the egg-throwing competition, where pairs of contestants threw eggs, some of them more like bounc ing bombs than farm produce, to each other. Inside the Memorial Hall, visitors

were able to admire the quality of the work in the craft, baking and flo ral competitions judged that morn ing. A pet show was also held during the morning and judged by local vet Mr Mike Rimmer. Entrants this year included a hen and a duck as well as the more obvious dogs and cats. Mrs Kath Molyneux, chair of the

i m W- i

village fete committee, said: “We are delighted with how successful the afternoon was. We’re particularly grateful to all the new helpers who gave their time this year.” The afternoon’s proceedings raised

around £800, some of which ivill be going to the Memorial Hall fund, with the rest being used for good causes.

, During the past year money from last year’s fete has been given towards the over-60s party and the refurbishment of the. children’s play area. Our pictures show: Top, Matthew
