Owner in court after thieves steal guns

THIEVES who broke into an outhouse at a home in Horton-in-Craven stole two shotguns from a cabinet. Blackburn magistrates heard tliat neither

of the weapons had been recovered or the culprits apprehended. And the chairman told Alan Keith Ellis

that his negligence had caused risk to the wider public. Ellis (55), of Horton Lodge, Horton-in-

Craven, Gisburn, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with conditions of a shotgun certificate. He was fined £250 with £65 costs. Philippa White (prosecuting), said Ellis

reported the burglary to the police and confirmed that two shotguns and a quan tity of ammunition had been taken. The police found no signs of forced entry to the building or the cabinet. Mrs White said Ellis was in breach of

two conditions of the shotgun certificate he held. He had not reported a change of address to the police and had not located the guns in a suitably safe place. Ian Huggan (defending), produced a let

ter from a locksmith confirming that the lock on the cabinet had been damaged.

Mr Huggan said his client’s home used

to be a hotel and many of the internal walls and floors were not suitable for fix ing the gun cabinet to. “He decided the outbuilding would be

the safest place and as he told the police it is normally kept locked,” said Mr Huggan. “He is obviously concerned about where the guns may have gone. . “My client is not going to renew his cer

tificate, he doesn’t want any more to do with guns.” Passing sentence the chairman said any

one who has guns needs to look after them very carefully. “No doubt these weapons have got into

the hands of someone who may not be responsible in the way they use them,” she said. “Negligence on your part has caused risk to the vvider public.”

Have you seen this

puppy?

A FRANTIC pet owner is offering a reward of £500 for the safe return of her missing puppy. Mrs June Bicker-

staffe, of Samles- bury, is desperate to find her black German shepherd, called “Tommi”. He was taken

from her home in the early hours of June 17th. The pet was

removed from a sta ble in Roach Road, and Mrs Bicker- staffe is concerned for her pup’s well bemg, as he isjjnly 10 weeks old. “He is still a

baby and so needs a lot of care,” said June. “I am so worried

that whoever has him is not looking after him properly.” Tommi (pic

tured) is mainly black, but has a slight tan marking on his feet, chest, face and inner ears. He has a long

and fluffy coat with stocky legs and body, is friendly and alert and a big puppy for his age. Anyone with

information can call June on 07793 639717 or 01254 852267.
