Blues’ spot of bother as more chances go begging

Clitheroe..................... 0 Eastwood Town ........1 A PENALTY and several prime opportunities on goal should have been

^ enough to see Clitheroe bury this game. But the lack of a finish in

front of goal once again proved costly as the first game of 2005 brought little cheer. Once again Clitheroe

were down to the bare essentials for this game, with only the luxury of one sub s titute on the bench and Paul Stansfield

. called on to play left back. But unlike the Kendal

Town game, none of the numerous chances created found the back of the net despite some positive play. After a lacklustre scrap

py first half that saw the Blues go behind early on to a Peter Knox goal, the second half saw a total

turn around. Clitheroe dominated for

45 minutes, saw Jason Jones have a penalty saved, and both Gary Jackson and Lee Cryer miss opportunities, while Chris Whittingham fired over the bar. There had been two

good chances in the first half as from a Paul Stans field cross, Jackson headed straight to the keeper, and Whittingham had a shot saved. But largely Eastwood

had the upper hand as the strong wind hampered the locals. The visiting side twice

more went close, but a great block from Ryan Parr and a similar clear ance from Adam Gardner alleviated the danger. After the break though,

the Blues looked revi talised, moved better and

created chance after chance, but when Jones missed his opportunity from the spot, it made you wonder what they had to do to score. Town’s Ben Hutchinson

handled the ball in the area on 56 minutes, and the resulting penalty had little conviction or pace, and Danny Bryant had it easily covered. Calls from Clitheroe

boss Paul Byron to get for ward were noted. Jackson had a header

from six yards saved, and his best effort, a one-on- one situation with the Town keeper, saw the unpressured Blues striker stroke his shot wide of the mark. Cryer had further

opportunities snuffed out, and Whittingham looked to have scored, but his rasping shot only dipped

THE defeat to Eastwood on Monday was made slightly more bearable knowing that we had gained three unexpected points the previous week a t

KendalTown. Going into these two games, I would have been

happy to take away three points, so will look at the festive period as a positive time. Ilowever, the Eastwood pm e should have pro

duced at least one point, if not all three, which would have set us up nicely for 2005. So now is the time to see what Paul Byron can

bring to the club. So far I have been impressed with what I have

I i i g i s i L e _ C E i n e n T l seen. The man shows a lot of passion for the game and , '

isn’t afraid to speak his mind when necessary. Provided this is done in the constructive maimer, which it appears to be, then this has to be good for

the club. His real test though begins now.

. Due to injuries, suspensions and player unavail

ability, we saw no substitutes at Kendal, and just one for the Eastwood game. For a club playing a t our level, this can’t be

acceptable. I t is well documented that the Christmas period

makes it difficult to move for players, and the fact we have been able to field a team for both games was

thekey. The squad is short not only in numbers, but also

in a little bit of extra quality. The inability to put the ball in the back of the net

was once more exposed on Monday, and we are left to regret Witton’s decision not to release Craig Sargeson. A proven goalscorer of his quality doesn’t come

available often, and let’s hope this deal may not yet be dead in the water. As Byron has stated though, we need more goals

throughout the team, and I’m sure that once he has had time to weigh up his options, he be looking toaddto what he already has. -

' ' ' More of a killer instinct and a touch of added

quality will make a huge difference to what is already a decent UniBond First Division side. So let’s look forward to the New Year with hope

and optimism and the possibility of new faces to be welcomed over the coming month.

Adrian Gapstick looks back on ,ah historic year a t Clitheroe Football Club

IT has been an historic year for Clitheroe FC. UniBond promotion

and the North West Counties Football League championship was no doubt the peak of the year as memories go, what with the culmina tion of the 2003/04 sea son’s hard work coming to a dramatic conclusion with a 3-2 victory over Nantwich back in May. The relief th a t fol

lowed finally scooping the honour after several seasons of trying and ever so nearly succeed ing was plain to see. Also the way the

locals have handled the speed of life in the Uni Bond league this season has to be commended, as, despite a lack of goals and some closely-run defeats, Clitheroe have proven that they are more than capable of matching any team in the league. However, there have
