Man attacked his girlfriend during a night out in town
A 34-YEAR-OLD man attacked his girlfriend as they walked through Clitheroe town centre after he had tagged along on a
girls’ night out. Blackburn magistrates heard
th a t John Addison Brockbank punched Christine Robinson repeatedly about the head and
face. She was left with a seven cen
timetre cut in her head, which required 10 staples, as well as extensive bruising to her face. Brockbank, of Buckingham
Drive, Read, pleaded guilty to assaulting Miss Robinson causing her actual bodily harm. He was given a conditional dis
charge for 12 months and ordered to pay £300 compensation and £65
costs. Mrs Sophie Lorimer (prosecut
ing) said the couple had been living together since July and there had been several incidents of violence towards Miss Robinson, but she had not reported them. On the night of the attack she
had gone out with two girlfriends as she usually did on a Sunday
night. “He didn’t like her going out
without him and decided to accom pany her,” said Mrs Lorimer. “He was getting more and more
agitated as the evening wore on and eventually Miss Robinson
decided to leave.” Brockbank fol lowed his partner across town com plaining that she thought more of her friends than she did of him. As she reached Albion Street he
dragged her to the floor by her coat and began punching her. Lee Hammond (defending) said
Brockbank was a man of previous good character who was deeply ashamed of his actions. He said Brockbank had not
drunk since the incident on December 5th and had sought counselling to help with his prob lems. “He hopes that in time a recon
ciliation can take place,” added Mr Hammond.

The union’s branch secretary at the council. Miss Linda Jones, along with Miss Judith Pali- ga, union membership secretary, prepared
all the food for the party, which was open to all employees’ children, regardless of whether their parents are union members. Miss Jones commented: “We couldn’t
have done it without Mr Jolly, who’s an entertainer from Walton-le-Dale, and kept the children spellbound.” The children also received gifts from Father Christmas, chocolates and enjoyed
festive music and games. Pictures show children’s entertainer Mr

BUmiBIIOM Help the hospice with unwanted gifts
“OH lovely, just what I always wanted!” How many of us uttered those words on
Christmas Day when what we were really thinking was: “What on earth have they bought me this for?” Now is the time to put those unwanted
presents to good use by donating them to a worthy local cause. East Lancashire Hospice is appealing for
any unwanted Christmas presents to help boost its vital work. Harry Grayson, head of fund-raising at
the hospice, explained: “Everyone receives presents at Christmas that are not ideally suited to them. Invariably they are just stored away and never used until spring
cleaning forces people into 'clear out mode. "Regardless of what the unwanted gifts
are, the hospice can turn them into tombola prizes, raffle prizes or sold in the hospice shop on King William Street, m
Blackburn. East Lancashire Hospice offers a superi
or service to the people of Ribble Vmley, Blackburn, Darwen and Hyndbum. How ever, this service comes at a price and the charity must now raise more than £400,0OU each and every year to meet its running
costs. Anyone wishing to donate can ring tne . ,
fund-raising office on 01254 660900 to arrange delivery or collection.
