Couple back home 1 after terror ordeal 1 A
all still petrified that another wave could hit at any moment. They remained there overnight along with around 80 other peo ple - a mixture of local Thai peo ple and tourists. “The Thai people were just
fantastic,” added Dawn. “They came out with all this food for everyone there. They also pro vided clothes for people who were still wearing what they had stepped out in that day.” Thankfully neither Dawn or
Richard sustained any injuries, although Dawn recalled how some of the people around her had not been so lucky. “When we were running away
from the wave and got to the road, we ran into one lady who was quite badly injured. She had been in her beach bungalow when it had collapsed around her and the glass from the windows had badly cut the backs of her legs. She was screaming for help and for people to fetch her sarongs to stop the bleeding.” Richard managed to find a
couple of sarongs to wrap around the lady’s legs and other men around him helped to build a makeshift stretcher in order to carry her to the trucks. Later, Dawn recalled how
Richard, along with another man, had broken into a local hospital in order to get much needed medical supplies for nurs es in the group of tourists to administer to the injured. She added how the severity of
the disaster had not hit home at first, until one of the Thai locals started listening to the radio. Dawn explained; “They were
all listening to it and we just kept catching these dribs and drabs of what they were trying to say to us in English. We start ed piecing bits together that the
Maldives had been completely wiped out. At th a t point we realised it wasn’t just a small localised incident. Panic set in and we knew we had to get word j home.” Luckily, one person in the
group had a mobile phone and they rang one person back in Britain with a list of telephone numbers to ring. The day after the disaster, the
couple returned to their beach bungalow , which luckily was still intact. After much search ing, they even recovered the shoulder bag containing their | passports, which they had aban doned on the beach when the
wave hit. They were later ferried off the
island and caught a bus into Krabbi, where the main local | hospital was and where many of the injured were being treated. They then travelled north for the remainder of their trip. Returning to their home in
Worsley, Manchester, on Mon day, Dawn, who is an accountant and Richard, an engineer, were coming to terms with what had | happened. “We know how lucky we have
been compared to many people, especially the local Thai people, who have lost everything includ ing their lives, homes and busi nesses. We totally feel for all those people who still don’t know where their friends and relatives
are.” Dawn added: “When it was
happening it was so unreal, like watching a film. It’s hard to com prehend that by some amazing fluke we were so lucky and in the right place, at the right time.” The couple are now planning
to make a donation to the Indi an Ocean Tsunami Earthquake Appeal. “We want to help out as much as we can,” Dawn com mented.
