Pair tell of Thai horror ordeal
by Julie Magee
A FORMER pupil of Clitheroe Royal Gram mar School spoke this week of her lucky escape from the tsuna mi earthquake disaster. Dawn Dryden (28)
recalled how she was just about to s it down to breakfast overlooking a beach on one of Thai land’s most unspoilt islands, when the giant wave hit on Boxing Day. The daughter of Mrs
Patricia Dryden, of Kirk- moor Road, Clitheroe, and older sister to Heather (27), Stacey (22) and Fiona (21), all of Clitheroe, Dawn had been planning a trip to Thai land with her boyfriend, Richard Gould (34), from Somerset, for years. They flew out for three-
weeks island hopping on December 11th and after visiting the usual tourist destinations such as Phuket, the couple trav elled to the small island of Koh Jum, which trans lates as “Remember Island”, situated between

wave come in, the couple went down to join the group of puzzled tourists now gathering on the beach to watch the extraordinary natural phe nomenon. A second, equally none
threatening wave washed over them, before they looked into the distance and saw a much larger wave making its way towards them. “Everyone realised this
Phi Phi and the mainland. The couple, pictured
above, who have been together for about four years, had had the trip of a lifetime until then, with Richard proposing to Dawn on Christmas Day night on the same beach tha t the wave would hit the next day. But i t would be the
events of Boxing Day morning for which the couple will remember Koh Jum island tor many years
to come. Dawn recalled the first time they realised something was wrong. “Richard saw what he
thought was the crest of a wave breaking on the hori zon and he said ‘what’s that?’ At first we thought it was two boats going in opposite directions and leaving their mark. It was so incomprehensible that it was a wave, because it is so totally calm out there all the time.” After watching the first
wave was a lot, lot bigger, and everyone started to run away from the beach, back behind the beach bungalows and up into the trees,” Da\vn remembered. She added how at that
point they had both realised how lucky they had been and were so thankful that a snorkelling expedition to Phi Phi, one of the worst hit Thai islands, th a t they had inquired about that morn ing, had been cancelled due to lack of demand. They were soon all
picked up in trucks by local Thai people and taken high up into the hills

Valley gears up to help victims
AS the full and horrific scale of the Asian tsunami disaster continues to unfold, people in the Rib- ble Valley have been doing whatever they can to help. We have a round-up of
what is happening locally and how you can help the disaster appeal on pages 10, 24 and 27 of this week’s paper. • Despite Tuesday’s bad
weather, two groups of collectors from Clitheroe’s Rotary and Lions clubs went to the Market and Castle Street. They collected more
than £200 in the first hour - an indication of the strength of feeling about the disaster and the generosity of local people. Just one story from
Tuesday’s collection was that of a mother and her two children, who donat ed bags of coins totalling several pounds. The money came from picking up coins in the streets of Clitheroe during the past year. I t all adds up and every penny counts. • See pages 10, 24 and
27 for more local events and reaction to the disas ter and appeal.
