Brian’s visit
lands first
prize By Edward Lee________
BRIAN MINTO paid a rare visit to his home club on Sunday when, with the help of Martin Drury (Stony- hurst) he went home with first prize from Clitheroe’s Open Fourball. Celebrating his wedding anniver
sary, Minto took time out to produce some solid golf and the winning score
r of 47 points was three better than the more regular Clitheroe competitiors Archie Moro and Peter Harrison. They took second spot after a card
play-off with Clitheroe’s Malcolm Brown and Gary Phillipson from Darwen. Home player Andrew Walmsley

showed his obvious surprise and delight to find he and partner, Ian Ready from Accrington, won the best gross with 35 points. Ted Speak topped the golden oldies
leaderboard when his gross 78 was good enough to win the Senior Club Championship, three shots ahead of John Whowell. Peter Pedder, not for the first time
this season, featured in the prize list. But he had to settle for second
place in the Senior Rosebowl behind the consistent Bill Farnworth who returned a nett 71. Alan Wright proved his mettle
with a solid 73 for third place while Eddie White, Derrick Eglin and young-at-heart Bill Birch won the age group prizes. Rob Andrew came good in Satur
day’s medal when his nett 69 left Tim Czerwonka and Mark Ashworth to settle for second and third spots in Division One - the latter’s gross 68 for a nett 70 only good enough for third spot! James Nutter took Division Two with a nett 65 from another new
member, Ben Connolly, with Roger
Cowey third. Philip Walmsley continued his
good run of late by taking the mid week medal, but only after cards after the same nett 70 as Chris Hamer and that man Pedder, again! Despite the change in weather con
ditions over the weekend, some excel lent scores were still posted at Myt- ton Fold in the bogey competition. The rapidly improving Glynn Wat
son continued his downward surge towards a single figure handicap by posting a fine +7 score. An always-commendable two at
the 221-yard 18th hole clinched the win from Tony Cross (+6) who edged out Ted Bamborough after a card play-off. Bamborough gained some consola
tion by winning the Division One prize, with the other divisional prizes going to Barry Hargreaves (+4) and David Halsall (+2). Once again, it was the weather
which was the determining factor in the Men’s Invitation at Whalley Golf Club with all the prizewinners com

ing from afternoon starters who enjoyed much the better conditions. Despite being hit on the head by a
ball during his round, Steve Shore man and his partner Dave Colley emerged as \vinners with 46 points. Mike Conroy and Tony Barton
were second with 45 points. The absence of any ladies in the
event enabled club president Les Dearden and his partner Jim Pilking- ton to take third place with 44 points. The best gross prize was won by
Roger Altham and Danny Liles with a four under par 68. Junior member Craig Gornall had
the round of his life on Sunday in the junior competition. Playing off 15, he shot a gross 71 -
one-under-par - and, not surprising ly, his nett score of 56 made him the clear winner of the competition R. Foster carded a nett 97.5 to win the Barry Bolton 27-holer at Stony-
hurst Park. T. Lee’s 66 won the 18 hole prizes and 0. Bolton’s 31 was the pick of the
nine-holers. Daphne Dawson won the ladies’
medal at Whalley with a round of 87- 10-77, finishing two shots better than the pair of Jane Smedley and Carole Blackadder. Maybeth Sloan won the 13-hole
veterans’ event. Lady Captain’s Day at Stonyhurst
Park resulted in victory for Tracy Blanc with a nett 70. She needed a card playy-off to bear
Margaret Carrington into second place with Carolyn Blocked a shot back in third place. Longest Drive won by Sue Tipton, nearest pin awards were played for on
two greens and the winners were Linda Ashworth and Leslie Chat-
burn. And handicaps were split into three
catagories with Linda Ashworth, Gwen Park and Janet Blain emerging as the winners. Tracy Blanc spreadeagled the field
top win the Frances Smith Qualifier- with a nett 63. Janette Dowdy and Janet Blain finished second and third respectively. Home members Margaret Carring
ton and Kathleen Hargreaves were joined by Valerie Beentjes (Dean Wood GO and Jean Brennan (Clitheroe) to win Stonyhurst’s Ladies Open Team event. Carolyn Blockeel, Susan Tipton,
Janette Dowdy and Carol Gorton used home knowledge to claim second spot and the visiting team of Betty Rostron, Agnes Seery, Anne Prior and Joan Birtwell from Whalley fin ished third. The well-supported Junior Open at
Clitheroe brought in young goiters from across the region to produce some sparkling golf. Never far off the pace, junior cap
tain Andrew Heesom took the gross prize with 74 while Mytton Fold’s Emma Clegg took the best nett girls with a 73. Marsden Park’s Tom Parker
topped the leaderboard wdth a nett 66 from Wilpshire’s Sam Towsend and Clitheroe’s James Paton who pro duced a better back nine to push Fairhaven’s Luke Olsson into fourth palce.
William Child won the junior sta-
bleford, getting the better of Tim Swarbrick by one shot.
