Weekend plan for next year’s show?

UNSEASONAL downpours on th e final day of th e historic Royal Lan ca shire Show failed to dampen th e spirits of the organisers who are prom ising a bigger an d b e t te r show next

Public welcomes police presence

EXTRA police officers were drafted in for the duration of this year’s Royal Lan cashire Show in the wake of the London bombings. Insp. Bob Ford, officer in charge of polic

ing during the popular three-day show, confirmed 40 officers a day were patrolling the 120-acres of the showground in an effort to ensure increased public safety. He added officers were stopping people

and carrying out random searches of bags and packages brought into the showground - a move welcomed by visitors. With no traffic delays or congestion,

Insp. Ford said he was pleased with the policing operation in place. He commented: “It was absolutely won

derful, just as we expected. Officers were drafted in from across the Eastern Division to cover the show. “The deployment of the extra officers at

those times increases public reassurance and ensures traffic control. “In total, there were six traffic points,

one mobile police station, a support unit and 40 officers, including police communi ty support officers, providing high-visibili- ty patrols on each and every day of the show.” Insp. Ford thanked the residents leaving

near to the Salesbury Hall site for their patience and support during the show

days. Rumour over ground

“WE know nothing at all about i t” was the response from show organisers to rumours circulating at Thursday’s show that Bilsbor- row could be the future venue. The rumours apparently stemmed from

ry- Wyre MP Ben Wallace has voiced concerns

to Duchy of Lancaster minister John Hutton about lack of information on the project and, as a result, the Government has now pledged that it will consult with local organisations over showground plans. The Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society

has not been contacted about the scheme, even though it is mentioned in a list of organ isations which the Government says it either will be or has consulted, and which were revealed in a parliamentary answer to Mr AVallace.

® VISITORS to the show were more than impressed by the portable toilets! Many remarked that they had hesitated

to visit the facilities on the field in previous years, but this year’s mobile loos were given a five-star rating by those who used them!

to bus service THE bus service for the duration of the Royal Lancashire Show has been hailed a success by civic dignitaries. Ribble Valley Mayor,

Coun. Mary Robinson, who attended the show as a visitor, praised the pub lic transport service on which she travelled to the showground. She said: “The bus serv

ice is excellent and you can enjoy yourself with out worrying about hav ing to drive!” For someone who has

been a regular attendee for the past six years, Coun. Robinson said the Salesbury Hall site was excellent and she enjoyed everything about the agri cultural show.

Public’s anger over early closure on final day

THURSDAY’S heavy rain and strong winds resulted in many exhibitors leaving

the site early. Their absence angered

numerous visitors who complained that, having spent £12 admission to the

field, they expected to find stands as labelled in the

catalogue. By mid-afternoon,

many stallholders were packing up, while others took the decision not to open on the final day.
