Patient hit dentist in the face with a clipboard

A DENTIST was hit in the face with a clipboard after asking a patient to fill

in a form. Blackburn magistrates heard he was

working at Clitheroe hospital as a NHS dentist at the time of the assault. Nigel Graham Biddulph (40), of Manor

Road, Clitheroe, pleaded guilty to assault ing Peter Vaughan-Williams. He was ordered to do 12 months community reha bilitation and pay £200 compensation to Mr Vaughan-Williams and £50 costs. Miss Judy Balderstone (prosecuting) said Biddulph attended for a 10-45 a.m.

appointment, having been referred by his GP. After an examination, Mr Vaughan- Williams decided he needed X-rays, but Biddulph seemed worried about that and what it might cost. “He was reassured that all the treatment

would be free and handed a form to fill in while he waited for an appointment,” said Miss Balderstone. “At th a t point he became abusive

towards the dentist. He was asked to leave, but instead approached Mr Vaughan- Williams and hit him in the face with the

clipboard.” Miss Balderstone said that at the time of

the incident Biddulph was on bail for offences of assault and assault causing

actual bodily harm. Liz Parker (defending) said her client

had difficulties as a result of drug-induced

psychosis. “In the past he has abused illegal sub

stances including heroin, cocaine and cannabis, resulting in this condition,” said

Miss Parker. “He had not been to the dentist for a

long time and he was apprehensive. One of the forms he was given suggested he was schizophrenic and he took exception to

that.”

Residents share war memories

WARTIME memories were shared by resi dents during a street party to celebrate the

anniversary of VE Day. Organised by Clitheroe Care Home, the

event, to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, was also enjoyed by residents’ families, staff and the Ribble Valley Mayor, Coun. Mary Robinson. Dressed in 1940’s clothes, staff served Spam

sandwiches, jelly and custard and lemonade to the party-goers. A sing-a-long to war songs, pass-the-parcel and dancing was also enjoyed

by everyone. “We tried to make the day as authentic as

possible,” said Mrs Jean Wooff, manager of the home. “It was good tor the residents who talked about the old days.” Our picture shows everyone enjoying the party. (A070705/2)
