j^orrect nutrition plays an important role in helping your pet live a.longer, healthierjand _ J fu l le r life. I talk to many pet owners seeking

advice about correct riutrition and.it.can-be very confusing with the dozens of different foods avail able on the market. Common questions asked are "What shall 1 feed my pet?” and Is,this okay to feed my pet?" To help you navigate the dazzling array, not to say confusing vanety, here is some advice. You need to make sure you use a food that is cor rect for your pet. A complete food provides all the nutrients your pet needs without any supplemen tary or complementary products but we can still make decisions about how to feed are pets, often on the basis of incorrect information, half truths, hearsay and commercial pet food marketing con cepts. We cart all sometimes be guil^ of believing what we hear on the radio or see oftte^ Complete foods are split into three groiips which are non premium (Brutus, pal etc). Premium (Bakers, Pedigree etc) and Super premium. I would recommend a specially formulated super premium food, which has been made, to ensure healthy growth and keep a pet fit at each stage of

their life. Examples of these super premium for mulated diets are Hill's Science Plan, James Wellbeloved, Pro Plan, Eukanuba, larris. Burns and Nutro Choice. There are many benefits from feeding your pet a super premium brand but here are just a few. They are manufactured to a fixed formula which does not change according to the market price of raw ingredients. Many com mercial pet foods use vari able formulation to main tain competitive pricing. For example wheat may be present in a food one week, and then because of cost, may be used in smaller quantities or substituted for a cheaper grain the next. This will strike a note with those who have experienced their pet going of there food but it not

onlv affects whether your pet likes the food from It is hearsay that it is more expensive to feed your one'^week to another but can lead to problems with pet on a super premium food. This concept is very digestibility, resulting in diarrhea. otherwise it would be more obvious Premium brand products are life stage and even. breed sensitive. Certain nutrient changes are need-,:v ed throughout your pet's life, what is nght for a-s, puppy can be harmful to the older dog. Super pre mium brands have been specially deveioped to meet the!differing needs of pets in accordance to their age and activity level. Animals eat to -at.-fy their need for energy.Total daily energy needs vary with an animal's age, activity level, temperament, environment, health and reproaucnve swius. Growing, active, pregnant and lactating animais ali require additional energy. This is why it js important to find a product that is correct for your pet's life stage. The type of dog is also a factor. Not all dogs are the sameiDifferent breeds and sizes of dogs need different hutritiqn. For example WSKg dog has twice the maintenance.energy requirement per kg as a 35kg dog. Therefore the amount of food con sumed each day must not only provide adequate energy, but also the required amount of protein, vitamins and minerals. Some commercial pet foods use gimmicks on their labels to enable them to make claims to be an "all meat" or "all chicken". A common gimmick is to use the word "with". Laws require pet food manufacturers to list ingredients on labels in a descending order by weight. Take a moment to study the ingredients in your current pet food and you may be surprised by what you find. Cleariy not all pet foods are created equally, you can see

lesser products use derivatives of meat. Super pre mium products use quality ingredients and these ingredients are what they say on the label. For example James Wellbeloved Lamb & Rice dog food contains minimum 26% lamb and 26% Rice.

-i-i— p . r more expensive than other complete foods on face

lvalue or cost per bag basis, they are surprisingiy ntiore economical on a cost per day basis because they have a high nutritional value per gram and you need to feed less than other foods. It is important that when comparing different pet foods on price, it is on cost‘per day and not cost per bag. For example lams actually costs just 25p per meal based on a 15kg dog and Eukanuba costs 19p per day for a 6kg dog. If they eat less, and more is used by the body, then this means less to clean up in the

garden. Some super premium foods can also help against

c e r ta in ailments such as i t c h y c a n i n e coats or p e r s i s tent diar- r h e a . M a n y vets rec- o g n i z e that food allergy in dogs is ve ry c o m -

m o n . They are hypo-allergenic and contain none of the ingredients known to cause the majority of canine food allergies: no beef, wheat, egg, soya or any forni of dairy products. Also they contain no unhealthy additives, artificial colours, flavours or preserva

tives. If you are going to consider changing your pet's food, it is important to gradually change to the new product. This should be done by mix ing the original food with the new for a period of 7 to 10 days to avoid causing digestive upset.

AFTER two years of waiting, fun-seek ing children and adults in Langho final ly celebrated the unveiling of a new

playground. The modern play facility at Bushburn

Drive Playing Fields, Langho, follows prK- sure from fed-up young mothers in the vil lage, who were concerned about the lack of facilities for youngsters. Their concerns resulted in the circulation

of a petition collecting over 200 signatures and the formation of the Langho Play ground Committee, wiiich managed to get

the project off the ground. The five-strong committee members

included Langho residents, Adele Black burn, who was responsible for addressing local issues, Kirsten Chambers, who organ ised separate fund-raising events in a bid to boost funds for the project and organised the launch party, Gail Jenkinson and Connie

Passerini, who visited local schools to gauge support, and manager, Mr John Foley, who was responsible for overseeing the successful

project. In total, the scheme has cost in the region

of £22,000 with funds being granted from Billington and Langho Parish Council, Rib- ble Valley Borough Council and Living Spaces - an organisation, which gives hun dreds of local groups the money, advice and practical support to change their environ ment for the better. The new playground, which has replaced

the very basic and “run-down” old play area, has seen the introduction of a stylish multi-play unit, a see-saw, a roundabout along with the appropriate safety surfaces, perimeter fencing and a picnic bench. The local primary schools agreed to take

part in involving some of their young chil dren in the selection process of some of the equipment with committee members Gail and Connie calling round at St Leonard’s C

of E Primary School and St Mary’s RC Pri mary School. The duo organ

ised a project with the teaching staff in

order that the chil dren could have an impact on what equipment would be installed, with St Mary’s selecting the roundabout and St Leonard’s the sea- saw.
