a Valley lord! A CELLO seller on the fiddle did dled a Ribble Valley lord with a historic instrument to be played in Clitheroe next week. When Clitheroe Concerts Soci
ety plays host to the acclaimed Coull String Quartet next week, one of the instruments so expertly played will be a cello with a che quered past. I t was made by Grancino, in
□PU! 5sr Fi-o^budo
Milan, around 1700, but later sold by virtuoso cellist Francois Ser- vais to the first Lord Ribblesdale, of Gisburn. Unfortunately the cheeky cellist sold it as an Amati - a more highly prized make - and the forged Amati label no doubt cost the Peer dear, as designer labels were coveted then as now! Next week’s concert by the
Coull Quartet is being eagerly anticipated by local music lovers. I t takes place on Wednesday, December 7th, at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School’s Sixth Form Centre, in York Street, starting at 7-30 p.m. The quartet’s recordings of the Mendelssohn Quartets were made BBC Radio 3’s recommend ed choice, while other CDs have been in the BBC Music Maga zine’s Recordings of the Year and given the similar New York Times accolade. Tickets are available through
Clitheroe Music, in Moor Lane, or Clitheroe Tourist Information Centre, in Market Place, or on the door subject to availability. For more information on
Clitheroe Concerts Society, con tact its secretary on 01200 423474.

Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, December 1st, 2005 ‘Tail’ with a happy end by Duncan Smith
CHRISTMAS has come early for a Clitheroe girl and her new best friend. Little Jessica Bowker (eight) has longed
for a pet dog for as long as she can remem ber, so when her mother saw an appeal for a dog in need of a loving home, she knew just
the place. Sheba, a six-month-old tan and white

cross-breed, was abandoned at Clitheroe’s Mearley veterinary practice in September. She was very poorly and timid when she arrived, leading staff to suspect she had been ill-treated. She was nursed back to health and
became a favourite of nurses there, who appealed through the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times for a home where Sheba would get the love she deserves. That appeal was answered by Nicola
Bowker, who sensed Sheba could be the answer to her daughter’s dreams. “Jessica has been nattering me for years
Teen photographer
on national shortlist A TEENAGER from Clitheroe beat off stiff com petition from thousands of budding David Bai leys to reach the shortlist of the RSPCA Young Photographer Awards. Matthew Fleming’s photographs of a coral fish
and flamingo wings were selected for the final shortlist of 29 photographs from 10,000 entries. The 13-year-old from Holme Hill will find out
if he has won an award at a ceremony in London on December 16th. He will be competing in the 12 to 18 age group to win an Olympus digital camera
and prize money. TV presenter, wildlife photographer and com
petition judge Chris Packham, said: “The overall standard was very strong, which made it difficult to come up with the shortlist.”
Ribble Valley MP slams flu jab fiasco
RIBBLE Valley MP Nigel Evans has slammed the Government for failing to grasp the amount of flu-jabs needed for the
Ribble Valley. Speaking in the House of Commons Mr
Evans said: “Every year we have a flu problem in this country and the Govern ment should have prepared responsibly for
the winter period.” He added: “It’s a disgrace that surgeries
throughout the Ribble Valley and Fulwood and its surrounding areas are running low on stock of winter flu-jabs. Some have
already run out.” Mr Evans has written to Secretary of
State for Health Patricia Hewitt demand
ing that she takes action. “The Government has dropped the ball,
and it is time to pick it up before lives are lost.”

well. “Sheba was a little timid at first, but she
has settled down nicely now and she has a really good temperament.” Jessica, who attends St James’ CE Pri
