CHRISTMAS can, quite literally, be a pain in the neck

/ 1

THE festive season is a time when even the biggest Scrooge can manage a smile. But Christmas trees, trimmings and turkeys are among the things that turn seasonal merrymaking into misery for thousands over the holiday period. Lugging piles of presents

around, dodgy decorating and long-distance journeys to visit relatives can make Christmas, quite literally, a pain in the neck. Back, shoulder and neck

injuries leave many people sidelined for the festive sea son. The stresses and strains of Christmas prepa rations and accidents will put around 80,000 people in hospital over the Christmas and New Year break. The Royal Society for the Pre vention of Accidents (RoSPA) predicts. “Christmas is such a hec

tic time of year that the caution and preparation people usually take getting ready for big events goes out of the window,” says Robin Shepherd, a regis tered osteopath. “The added stress of

■ THE PERILS OF CHRISTMAS Aches and pains can

cause thousands of people in the UK to frown their way through the festive sea- son. But Christmas mishaps can be avoided, according to Roger Vincent

dle - if it is, take an extra pair of hands to help. Don’t struggle with a tree if you can’t fit it safely in the car - order a delivery.

■ DECKING THE HALLS If you have a tall tree or

you’re putting up decora tions, use a stepladder to avoid over-reaching. Ensure it is set up properly with no obstructions. When it comes to outdoor Christ mas lights, leave it to an expert.

■ DRIVING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS Sensible planning can

■ SHOPPING Make shorter, more fre

quent visits to the shops so you don’t have to carry too many heavy loads. If a big spending spree is unavoid able, try not to carry heavy shopping too far. Arrange to have heavy goods like TVs and computers deliv ered to your door.

■ THETREE Ensure your Christmas tree is not too heavy to han

overcome aches and, more importantly, accidents when driving long dis tances. Take rest breaks at least every two hours. Using other forms of trans port, sharing driving and making overnight stops can also help.

■ WINTER WEATHER Wear appropriate shoes

with good grips during icy spells. If you’re out cele brating, take your party shoes with you in a bag. When the weather’s very bad, look a f te r elderly neighbours and relatives by doing shopping for them.

■ SAFER SEASON “Christmas is an occa

sion we should all enjoy, so i t ’s worthwhile preparing your body for the festive period,” says chartered physiotherapist Augustine

Aluko. • Continued on next page

list before Christmas to avoid aches and injuries, Augustine advises. “Engage in posture awareness classes,

gentle aerobic activities and exercise such as swimming. Cardiovascular work in a gym will enhance general circula tion and gentle stretches every morning or evening will maintain flexibility,” he says. “Have a general physical MOT - look

for any niggling parts of the body and seek advice before a crisis occurs due to stress or strain.” Christmas is also a time when we eat,

drink and be merry - without thinking of the consequences. “Eat, drink and dance in modera

tion,” Robin Shepherd advises. “A fami ly walk after a big lunch really can help aid digestion and stretch tight muscles. “Many people also have that once-

yearly dance to ‘Oh, I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day’, ending up in a twisted heap, unsure as to whether the

■ STRAIN OF CHRISTMAS Seasonal injuries from rushing around

like a headless turkey aren’t the only pitfall of Christmas. Stress brought on by taking on too much can cause painful back, shoulder and neck pain. Physical effects can include; • Excessive tiredness • Aches and pains resulting from

tense muscles and backache. • Tension headaches • Increased pain from arthritis and

other conditions Robin says: “Physical stress from
