Camera club’s focus on less modern ways

AFTER two or three meet ings examining the ways that modem digital tech nology could be used to improve photographic prints, members of Rib blesdale Camera Club focussed on less modern technolo^ at their latest two meetings. Mr Roy Hargreaves

cialised in “before and after” pictures of ladies as they normally appeared, and after a makeover by a skilled make-up artist. His approach to the pho

talked about his life as a professional photographer. Now 82, he began his career just after the Second World War, at a time when it was fashionable to imag ine young women as rather “otherworldly” beings. He won many awards, includ ing the President’s Award from the Master Photogra phers Association, of which he was a fellow. These were often for his

i

dreamy, soft focus portraits of young girls in flowing white dresses, dipping a foot delicately into a stream. The reality was, of course, different, with freezing water in winter making the only likely dream that of a towel and a hot coffee! With more mature women, he spe

tography of men was ve^ different. He specialised in gritty, worn faces, pho tographed in harsh lighting and with biting sharpness. The common factor was the quality of his colour printing. Last week was a viewing

of the Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union’s current colom slide folio. Ribblesdale had only one entry, a slide by Trevor Marklew, of the Cao Dai Temple, just outside Ho Chi Min City in Vietnam. This, however, attracted lavish praise from the com mentator. Next Tuesday will be a

C L ITH ER O E R o u n d Tab le ladies’ evening proved a resound ing success, w i th 90 people attending to show their support for the organisation. The annual social evening, which

this year was held a t the Spread Eagle, Sawley, aims to include mem bers’ wives in the Clitheroe Round Table calendar. It also gives Round Table couples

the chance to enjoy an event togeth er before many of its members are called away for the Santa float col lections, which are held around the Ribble Valley to raise much-needed

funds for local worthy causes. Guests included friends from other local organisations, such as the 41 Club and local Rotarians, as well as Area 34 chairman Peter (ialey. Speeches were provided by

Clitheroe Round Table chairman Roger Spensley and Clitheroe Ladies’ Circle chairman Carol Hardy before members enjoyed a meal and disco later. The small profit made from the

event will go towards hosting the international twin table visit next year from Lemvig in Denmark. Thanks have been expressed to

member Steve Graham, who organ ised the social event, and members of Clitheroe Ladies’ Circle, who deco rated the room. Anyone wishing to know more

about Clitheroe Round Table can call vice chairman Rob Stevenson on 07855 826079 or visit the web-site at www.rt552.org Our picture shows guests at the

A PLAY promoting the anti-bullying message was performed by children a t St Leonard’s Primary School, Langho. Year 6 pupils took part in the pro

duction as part of last week’s nation al Anti-Bullying Week.

Pupils’play gets across anti-bullying message Mentored by Cheryl Drinkwater,

of Nacro, the pupils spent the past six weeks with the anti-bullying serv ice, who had been delivering aware ness sessions on the topic. The children, who took part in var ious activities, learnt what is classed

as bullying, how it makes a person feel and what to do if they are being bullied. Our picture shows Cheryl
