A MOTHERS’ Union will benefit from a Christmas party held at Read Primary School. The fair on Saturday raised more

than £1,000 for the St John’s CE Church, Read, Mothers’ Union, from the usual stalls, tombola and raffle. Father Christmas also made an appearance. Miss Barbara Lord,

branch leader, said: “The fair was very well supported and I would like to thank everyone who came along and those who helped out. “The money will go towards the

Mothers’ Union overseas relief fund, the Mothers’ Union caravan, and to help other other members of the branch.”

“Less obvious is the emotional

stress from rising to the deiiiands of this highly-charged time of year.” Simple lifestyle changes can

make all the difference to your sea sonal stress. As well as taking regu lar exercise and eating a balanced diet, change your attitude. Try delegating or sharing your

responsibilities at Christmas and never take on more than you know you can cope ivith. When it all gets too much, don’t turn to Christmas tipples to cope. Instead listen to music or relaxation tapes and find humour in stressful situations.

■ PREVENTION IS THE BEST PRESENT “When you’re carrying the

weight of the world on your shoul ders, tension is most commonly experienced in the neck and shoul ders and felt as pain,” says Robin Shepherd. But there are daily exercises that

can help, and he has this advice. “The best cure is prevention. To

help your back, neck and shoulders cope, keep them warm. Exercise them by shrugging your shoulders up and down, backwards and for wards and around in circles - as long as it feels comfortable and

easy. “Also let your head fall slowly to

your chest and gently roll from side to side. Give yourself a double chin for 30 seconds by pretending you’ve got a string attached to the top of your head and someone’s gently trying to make you taller. Remem ber to breathe.” Robin believes breathing proper

ly is crucial to coping with Christ mas stress: “Rapid, shallow breath ing is common with stress and ten sion, which can make your back tight and add to your problems. “Take it easy. Feel your abdomen

rise and fall when you breathe slow ly and rhythmically. Taking time out is key for a pain-free, healthier and happier New Year.”

Christmas Day Lunch

Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, December 1st, 2005 23

Bags of toys - we still need more

WE need your help. Already, bags full of beauti

ful new toys and gifts have been delivered to our offices and to the Salvation Army shop in Clitheroe for this year’s Toy Appeal. But we still need more, espe

cially as we want to help as many local families as possible who are in desperate need. Last year, thanks to the gen

erosity of Clitheroe Advertiser and Times readers. Salvation Army leaders Capt. Elizabeth Smith and Lt Brenda Wise were able to deliver presents to 94 youngsters across the town. This year they have already received more requests for

help. Said Capt. Smith: “We have

need more. If not enough toys come in we will have to priori tise and make some very diffi cult decisions. Every family that we are told about is in des perate need and it would be quite heart rending to have to leave some of them out.” Along with Capt. Smith, we

at the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times want to ensure we pro vide as many presents as possi ble for children, from babes in arms to teenagers. Toys and gifts - particularly

for hoys and girls aged between 12 and 14 - can be taken along to the Salvation Army shop in Lowergate on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and on Saturdays until noon, or the Advertiser and Times office in King Street. To enable as many people to help us as possible we have decided to extend the Toy Appeal dead line. The last day for collection will now be Wednesday, December 14th.

• THERE has been a good

response from people wanting to attend the Salvation Army’s special Christmas Day lunch. For a few hours over

lunchtime on December 25th, a festive meal, followed by fun and fellowship, will be held at the Salvation Army’s base in Lowergate for anyone who would otherwise be spending the day alone. If you want to attend, let the Salvation Army know by filling in the coupon on this page and taking it to the shop in Lowergate. Volunteers drivers are still

needed to take people to and from the lunch. If you can spare just 30 minutes, Capt. Smith would he delighted to hear from you. She needs drivers willing to

either pick people up and take them to the meal in Lower gate, or collect them and trans port them home. If you can help, contact Capt. Smith on 01200 428955 or 07709 351394.
