No crisis over Parkwise funding

RUMOURS that the Parkwise Scheme is in a funding crisis have been dismissed by council

officials. A recent report by Kib

ble Valley Borough Coun cil’s street scene manager, Mr Graham dagger, revealed that the council is owed £25,000 by Lan cashire County Council, which runs the county wide Parkwise scheme.

Pupils give to needy children

CHILDREN at Gisburn Primary School have been working hard to ensure tha t Christmas this year is a happy time for children from around

the world. They have once again

been involved in creating Christmas gift boxes for the charity “Operation Christmas Child”. The school library has become a Christmas

Grotto as the boxes are stored before beginning their long journey to reach children from some of the world’s most deprived areas in time for Christmas. Mrs Ashworth, the

school’s deputy head teacher, said; “The chil dren are always very moved by the images tha t they see on televi sion of children from

around the world whose lives are affected by poverty, hunger and nat ural disasters. “The wonderful

response th a t we get shows just how much our children care.” Our pic tures shows, from the left, Daisy Cocks, James Grummett and Humaira Patel helping to sort the bo.xes before they are col lected. (s)

Helen’s words of wisdom

"DON'T eat all your little treats at once this Christ mas" was among the advice given at the November meeting of Rib ble Valley Diabetic Group. These words of wisdom

came from dietician Helen Loughlane, who is based at Blackburn Royal Infir mary, and Janette Daeth, based at Accrington Victo ria Hospital. They went into detail,

illustrated by slides, of the ingredients of food, partic ularly carbohydrates, the

amounts of these being particularly vital for those taking insulin. They advised checking blood sugar levels and adjusting insulin dosage where nec essary and if possibe to check on food availability and quantity at parties, planning the day if possi ble, having a snack after alcohol, keeping fat intake down and the use of diet mixer drinks. Following a conference

he had attended, the group’s chairman, Gordon

Store’s computer gift for whiz kid children

RIBBLE VALLEY school pupils could become the next generation of comput er whiz kids thanks to Tesco in Clitheroe. The supermarket has

donated computer equip ment to five Ribble Valley schools as part of its Com puter for Schools scheme. Ribble Valley MP Nigel

Evans presented the equipment to pupils from Clitheroe’s Brookside Pri mary School, St Michael and St John R.C. School and Pendle Primary School, as well as St Augustine’s R.C. High School, Billington, and Brennands Endowed Pri mary School, Slaidburn.

Through the scheme,

customers are given a voucher for every £10 spent in a single transac tion. They are then free to donate the vouchers to a school of their choice. Since the scheme began

in 1992, schools have received over £90m worth of computer equipment including almost 55,000 computers and more than 600,000 items of addition al equipment, such as printers and software. Pictured is Tesco man

ager Phil Mallery and MP Nigel Evans presenting computer equipment to pupils from local schools. {B211105/1)

Dixon, informed the meet ing th a t next year “sharps” - the needles used to check bood sugars and those for injections - would not be collected with household waste. Let ters would be distributed to each household. The group meets on the

second Monday of each month, the next meeting being on January 9th with Sister Stephanie Zak, dia betes specialist nurse at Whalley Medical Practice, speaking about her work.

The report, which was

discussed at last month’s Planning and Develop ment Committee, read as follows; “An account was sent to the county council in May this year for pay ment of the 2005/04 deficit. This has not yet

been paid. “The county council

now want to review and revise the method of accounting for these costs for all districts and set a

consistent template by which accounts are pro

duced. “Meanwhile, the council

are owed £25,000 for

2004/05.” However, a spokesman

for the council said; “This is a minor hiccup. “At the present time

county council owes us money, but that is not to say the matter cannot be

resolved. “Parkwise is a new

scheme and with any new projects, it will take time for the financial matter to be settled.” Mr dagger added in his

report; “By and large parking enforcement in the Ribble Valley is working well. “Efficient and effective

enforcement is what we try to achieve, responding to complaints received about problem areas wherever possible.”

Santa to visit Valley youngsters

FRIENDS and neigh bours in Bolton-by-Bow- land are anxiously await ing the arrival of a very special guest this Saturday. Father Christmas is tak

ing time out of his busy schedule to spend a few hours listening to the wish es of young and old alike in Bolton-by-Bowland Vil lage Hall. He is expected to arrive at around noon by horse drawn sleigh along main street and everyone is invited to come along and welcome him, the more the merrier. The village hall has also
