A BAND of roving Ribbic Valley players has returned tri umphant from staging a new play at the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival. “Ribcaged”, pictured, is an offshoot of Ribchester
Amateur Theatrical Society (RATS), and was formed to take the new play, written by one of the performers, to Edinburgh. Here RATS stalwart Keith Flood tells the story of Ribcaged and its memorable rveek north of the border.
MEMBERS of Ribcaged returned from their week performing at the presti gious Edinburgh Fringe Festival, have been telling us about their feelings and experiences of being per formers on a much larger “stage” than they are used to as members of Ribch ester Amateur Theatrical Society. script for the play, “The War Bus”, and based it on true stories from his own and other friends' family histories of both world wars. The play premiered, as a RATS production, at this June's Ribchester Fes tival and was very well received by capacity audi ences at Stydd Church and was singled out by Adrian
Partington, the Festival's Director, as one of the suc cesses of the whole Festi val. Then onto the Fringe,
where the play, now being produced under its Ribcaged title, was fea tured at The Rocket Venue in central Edinburgh. This venue was founded,
and is still run by, Richard Demarco, a veteran of 59 Festivals and one of the leading lights in Edin burgh's arts world. He also came to see the play on its last day and stayed behind to give his highly favourable impressions, and to suggest ways in which the play might be further promoted. The play ran for a week
to good audiences, especial ly on Friday, and was favourably reviewed in Scotland's daily paper. The Scotsman, with a three-star rating and a recommenda tion to see it. The review said that the start of the play was like

the big screen. Film club chairman Bruce Dowles says:

The play, it said, was “decently acted and recreated the period well”. The publication “Three Weeks”, which reviews every show at the Fringe, gave an extremely favourable review: “I t is not often that a
play is so powerful, so touching and so real that it reduces the audience to tears, but this play did. The emotive show takes an inti- mate look at life during World War Two. Set in the local pub it does not exploit fancy special effects or dra

matic overacting - it does not need to, the intense emotion that swells from its characters and the real haunting memories that linger 60 years on are enough to make this play a success. “I t is slow-paced and
sentimental and won't be to everyone's tastes, but if you like gritty, historical plays, then this one is for you." Owen said that all the
cast and helpers had found the whole experience of being at the Festival as per formers very exciting and stimulating and that they were also able to see many other productions, from stand-up comedy to musi cals.
Owen said that Ribcaged
would like to express their very grateful thanks to so many people in the com munity who had encour aged, sponsored, visited and otherwise helped the production. The response had been fantastic. As for the future?, well
Owen has been asked if he would stage the play else where and also whether other groups could perform it. Those who have seen it know that it would make excellent film or TV mate rial, so who knows? Does the Fringe beckon
next year for Owen? Well, he has been asked to return, so watch this spacel
