ESTATE agent Bill Honeywell is now on the final leg of his charity ride through Germany to Lemvig. Mr Honeysvell (pictured) is raising
money for the Christie Hospital, Manchester, and the Multiple Sclero sis Society. He has been sending regular bul
letins of his progress to his brother-in- law, Alan Breckell. Here, we print extracts from them. August 24lh
Great news. Bill is ahead of sched
ule by some 40k. He had a great day, racing along a coastal stretch at 30 kmh with the \vind behind him for a change. He has also reported that today he managed to get more food than previous days and had much more energy. For the foodies amongst you. I'm
sure you will be pleased to hear that Bill did manage to get his steak and extra chips last night plus a couple of beers. Total distance to date is 565k (approx 340 miles). Tomorrow his route is via Hooksiel, Wilhelmshaven to Varel a distance of about 80k. August 25th
Bill has arrived in Varel, which
means he is still on schedule. I spoke to him this morning and he reported that the weather was dire, but it has improved as the day progressed. Today’s distance was 86k and it was, in his words, an easy day. For this trip. Bill has fitted panniers
on his bike which :ue making it harder to cycle on the flat than it was to climb hills as he did in
Le.Jog two years ago. Tonight he is staying with Herbert Kaiser in Blexen (Round Table friend) and going out for meal with him in Jever (which is where he started from this morning)! Needless to say, he is not cycling tonight! The route tomorrow is via Blexen,
Cuxhaven, to Hemmoor. August 2Gth
I'm not sure if you realise that the
weather forecasting accuracy of our European partners is just as suspect as our friends at the Met Office. Today’s forecast for Bill’s route was sunny intervals. There was no mention of preciptation of any kind. Reality turned out to be gales, heavy showers and very cold! All in all, a really tough day.
Bill has covered Y9k, having cycled
round Jadebusen (for you German speakers you tvill understand that this translates as Jade Brest). Bill reckons this is quite reasonable if you look at the map, but it helps to have a few drinks first. Tonight he is staying with friends
again and is hoping for an early start. The weather forecast for the weekend is for sunny intervals, so let’s hope it’s accurate this time. For the foodies amongst you, last
night’s meal was Schnitzel with Jaeger sauce plus all the trimmings and tonight’s repast is reported to be fish. August 27(h
Day nine and Bill is just over half
way through his challenge. Last night he stayed with friends and today he reports a better day with 114k covered in good weather. The only problem was road works on a cycle path with no signed diversion - needless to say Bill managed to “plot and bash” the way through. Tonight he is staying in a restaurant with rooms just outside Stade - the rooms are .some 500 metres from the reception/restaurant and his bike is chained to the banister outside his room! After dining on smoked salmon, eel and mackerel last night, he is splashing out on steak with the trimmings for the princely sum of 5.5 euros - the best deal so far. Sunday will bring a crossing of the Elbe and he plans to stay overnight in Gluckstadt tomorrow.
August 28th
Two reasons to celebrate tonight. First, Bill has gone through! the
1,000k mark and, as a bonus, England have beaten the Aussies at Trent Bridge (tor our mainland readers in Europe - England have beaten Aus tralia at cricket, (which is as rare an event as finding hens’ teeth)! Although he has only covered 80k today, he is on schedule. He decided to take a more westerly
i
option, avoiding Hamburg and is now staying overnight at Friedrichskoog which is about 60k northwest of Glusckstadt and at the mouth of the river Elbe. In fact, he arrived in Gluckstadt,
which was his planned overnight stop by 11 a.m., so decided to push on, but was baulked for most of the afternoon by ferry delays. Bill's route tomorrow takes him north west via Meldorf, Busum to St Peter Ordnig and is then only two days away from entering Denmark.
August 29lh All in all, a very good day. It started
well, wth very strong following \vind and by 12-45 p.m. he had reached Husum, which was a ride of 86k and his planned overnight stop. He decid ed to press on and eventualy reached Dagb^l which was a total of 134k. So tonight, he is only 38k from the Dan ish border! However, the afternoon was quite hard Mth the wind in his face. He reports that his lodgings for the
Ifl m
night are in a "fairytale cottage" which he chanced upon ^ter asking a local if she knew of any accommodation. After a long conversation with a cafe owner and a free cup of coffee, the owner took him to this fantastic cot tage. Yesterday morning went well, but
the afternoon was more difficult due to road works on cycle paths and a rather large rock concert which he had to navigate around. August 30lh
Well, Bill has made it into Denmark
and is staying overnight in Ribe, which has the distinction of being Denmark’s oldest town. Today’s ride was a total of 100k
through the towns of Hojer, Romo to Ribe. According to his schedule there are 213k to go before he arrives in Lemvig, hopefully on Friday. The weather was set fair all day and
this is due to continue until at least Thursday. O If you've already made a dona
tion, thank you - your contribution will help The Christie Hospital and Multiple Sclerosis Society. If you haven't sponsored Bill yet,
why not visit
www.honeywell.co.uk now where you can find full details of how to donate, including a link to the JustGiving web site. If you've already made a donation,
thank you - your contribution will help The Christie Hospital and Mul tiple Sclerosis Society.
Poor weather conditions fail to deter gardeners
DESPITE difficulties experienced by local gardeners during the last few days of rain, entries for Bolland Gar dening Club’s annual show on Sunday compared reasonably with last year. In fact, entries in the flower, fruit and vegetable classes showed a satisfacto ry increase and now stand at record levels. The photography display also con
tinues to go from strength to strength and has again shown a slight increase in entries. The other sections unfortunately
showed a decease from last year, prob ably due to the very high number of entries previously received, which was unlikely to be repeated. However, the reasonable number of entries on show were considered by the judges to be of very high quality, particularly in the floral art section. The judges also commented favourably on the high standards achieved by all exhibitors. The prizegiving ceremony was
presided over by chairman Mrs Mar garet Middleton who introduced Mr Hanson, of Hanson’s Garden Centre, who had kindly agreed to present the trophies and prizes to the winners. ■The Bolland Cup for the member
with most points was won by Mrs Brenda Hoyle repeating her success of
last year. Mrs Hoyle also won the Milne-Redhead Rose Bowl for the most points in the flower classes. The tankard for the runner-up to
the Bolland Cup was won by Mrs Joan Corless. Mrs Gail Waddington
won the Closes Hall Cup for most points in the vegetable section with the Murphy Challenge Cup going to Mrs Joan Corless for the best entry in this class. Mrs Jacqueline Pickard once again
won the Mary Heaton Trophy for the most points in floral art with the Barker’s Shield for most points for roses going to Mr and Mrs J. John ston. Mrs Pickard also won the con fectionery trophy with the preserves trophy going to Mrs Mary Pickles. 'The Dinsdale and Kay Challenge
Trophy for most points in the com bined flowers, fruit and vegetable classes was shared by Mrs Gail Waddington and Mr Roger Dewhurst. The photography trophy was shared by Mrs Adele McCally and Mr Neil Campy. In the children’s section Joseph
Mellin won the Alice Bowe Cup for most points in the six and under age group with Hannah Mellin winning the Hammond Cup for most points in the seven to 11 age group. Finally, but definitely not least, the
John Cowgill Trophy for the best exhibit in the show was won by Mrs Marilyn Campy for her eye-catching arrangement in the floral art section.
